a GTX970 will run overwatch at 1400P near maxed you are fine.

When you look at RAM in a computer, certain intensive programs use different amounts of RAM, some more or less than others.

 

It's kind of the same in a GPU. Certain games and especially, certain resolutions will use more RAM, so its a huge advantage to have as much as possible.

That is the amount of Vram the card has more is not always better. Just think of it like system memory but only for GPU related tasks. More is better

These numbers refer to how much dedicated video memory your GPU has. More doesn't always mean better however - a Radeon R9 390 8GB is far less powerful than a GeForce GTX 980Ti 6GB in gaming for example.

the gpu would be the reason the 1080 is faster, not the vram..........

If you don't mind waiting, I'd go for the RX 470 or 460

970s are pretty cheap these days (saw one on hardware swap for 180 shipped), but it's still a bit much.

All joking aside, VRAM capacity is (usually) not directly related to the amount of frames per second you will get out of a GPU. VRAM speeds and bandwidth can certainly affect FPS, but the difference between 6GB and 8GB wont affect your performance at all (so long as you have more VRAM than your program is trying to use). If you run OUT of VRAM, if your program pushes it past that limit, you can run into SERIOUS frame rate issues. you can go from like 50 fps down to 5 fps (these are guestimation numbers, not exact math, but thats basically how it would be).

 

If you have 2 GB of VRAM, but your program is trying to use 3 GB... then you're going to have a very bad time. If you have 4 GB of VRAM, but your program is trying to use 3, you are going to be fine. if you have 8 GB of VRAM, but your program is trying to use 3, there will be no performance improvement over the 4GB one (assuming they're they same GPU). Basically, having too much doesn't improve your performance at all. Having too little can be utterly crippling.

 

VRAM is used to store all sorts of different features in game. I'm not sure of all of them, or exactly how much each one matters, but things like texture quality, resolution, anti-aliasing, etc are some of things that play a factor on total VRAM usage in any particular game.

Well I know that overwatch at MAX settings at 1080p gives me 3GB of vram usage. but if you take off some of the settings (honestly most of them barely change the appearance of anything in that game) then you will probably be totally fine. I've never played that other game though, so I couldn't tell you.

 

Most of the other games I've played fall in the 1.5-2.2 GB range (again, max graphics). If you don't play at totally maxed graphics, you will definitely be fine with 2 GB

 

RX 480 4GB. if that's too much, go for 470. MAYBE 1050, but who knows if/when that is coming out.
