no, even a 980 isn't overkill for 1080p.  Especially if you have 144hz monitor.  I've got 2x980's with a 144hz monitor and I could even use a bit more power tbh.  Newegg just listed an (ugly) 980 under 300$ USD but its today only

tbh I think im gonna stick with the non overclockable motherboard, There is very little difference from What im seeing, and by very little I mean Like 1-2 fps difference in most games

That fucking sticker on it... Makes the card like 100x better. Sold my 980ti and bought 5 of those. Would have gotten more but they limited it

A GTX 970 is decent for 1080p, but it can't run all games at 1080p max settings and still get a solid 60 FPS. A GTX 980ti or GTX 1070 isn't even overkill for 1080p. At this point, anything less than a GTX 970 or RX 480 is going to have to make significant compromises in graphical fidelity in order to reach 60 FPS at 1080p in modern AAA games, and in some graphically-intensive games, like Witcher 3 and Assassin's Creed Syndicate, a GTX 970 or RX 480 will also have to make some compromises in graphical fidelity to get 60 FPS at 1080p.

Is a gtx 970 sc overkill for 1080p? Im hearing that from alot of youtubers and stuff.

Because of the recent price drop in the 970 sc I can afford it for my first build but I definitely can't afford a 1440p moniter...help

You mean like an EVGA 970 SC? Because that's one of the worst 970s you can get. The power delivery is pitiful which really holds back overclocking. You would be better off with the FTW edition, MSI, or the Gigabyte G1 (the best one).

First build every: Intel Core i7 4790K, Asus Z97-A/USB 3.1 motherboard, Kingston HyperX FURY 1866 2x8 16GB Kit, Gigabyte Windforce GTX 970 G1 Gaming, Corsair Obsidian 450D Black ATX Mid Tower, Samsung 850 EVO 250GB & 3TB Toshiba HDD, EVGA SuperNOVA 750W G2, Corsair H100i GTX 240mm, Gigabyte Bluetooth 4.0/Wifi Card, Logitech G700S. Running on Windows 10

Surface Pro 3: i5 4300U with 8GB of ram and 256GB SSD. Running Windows 10 Pro
