RX 480 vs GTX 1070

Im going to buy a new graphics card and it stands between the gtx 1070 and rx 480. I live in Norway so the price for the 1070 is around 590dollars and the 480 around 350dollars. I play only at 1080p and want to play at high-ultra settings at a steady 60fps. Which one should i choose?

Defiantly the 480, also know that it is more than capable at 1440p if you ever wanted to bump up your resolution

how much for a GTX 970? or even a used GTX 980 maybe?! both of these are faster than the 480

That's like asking this:

2008_honda_civic_sedan_gx_fq_oem_1_300.j vs 2015-BMW-M3-sedan-10-Things-Placement2-6

Since he's playing on 1080p, you have to add speed limit to 50km/h xD Both will do that lol

So for 1080p gaming, RX 480 is just fine. It will get you 60fps on ultra settings.

Meanwhile, GTX 1070 will get you 60fps at ultra settings for 1440p.

gtx 970 is a little more expensive than the rx480. the 980 costs as much as the 1070.

well aftermatket coolers will probably cost more so fair warning but...

unless you plan on watercooling or really dont care about ocing and noise/heat

then get the reference

if you are bothered by noise/heat and dont plan on watercooling and are ok with $20-$25 more

then wait for aftermarket

Looking for a steady 60fps??  honestly, it depends on what you consider "High" vs "Ultra", what CPU you have, and what games you play...  Are you trying to max out every setting on games like Witcher 3?  Based on reviews I've seen, I don't think the 480 can keep up...  I just posted a long explanation of bottle-necking with charts showing results from several tests...  At Ultra Settings for really demanding games, you'll want the 1070...

OP, you won't be playing all AAA games at max graphical and at 60 FPS settings with an RX 480. Already, there are games that a GTX 970 can't play at 60 FPS, which is the same performance bracket as the RX 480, and graphical requirements of games increase as time goes on.

If you want smooth 60 FPS high graphics playing for the next few years, you'll have to get a GTX 1070. Also, the prices you mentioned, $350 vs $590, make the GTX 1070 out to be the better price-to-performance value.

480 and 970 trade blows back and forth. I've seen the 480 beating the 970 in a few games but I've also seen it lose and it's brand new compared to an old card.

GTX 1070 is a completely different class of card.

Aftermarket coolers will be much better.

Sapphire will probbably do some nice version of it, that will keep card cool and quiet.

But it will cost more. No idea how much more, but it will just be more expencive since they will probbably put backplate on it aswell.

That's something I don't like about RX 480. I know that they want it to be cheap, but some plastic backplate is cheap to manufacture, so they could at least give us that.

Cooler that is few centimeters over PCB looks just bad.

Well that's true :P

But my point is, that anything you throw at RX 480 on ultra settings for 1080p, it will give you 60fps. Except Witcher 3 and Crysis 3.

Crysis 3 will get you 57fps, and somewhere around that for Witcher also.

But there will be drivers updates and optimisations that will get you 60fps in those games also.

So for 1080p gaming, that's what you can buy.

Sure GTX 1070 will also give you 60 fps at all games at 1080p.

But unless OP will upgrade to 1440p, I don't see point why would he spend more money on GPU if he doesn't realy need it. But I'm not here to judge lol

Simple fact: RX 480 is 1080p king.

I'm pretty sure the "King" would have a hard time keeping up with my old ass 980ti at 1080p xD

Bet Fallout 4 shows some nasty dips, as with FarCry Primal and ROTTR. The 480 might not be overkill for 1080p, but that doesn't make it better ;)

They're both capable of what you're looking for right now as long as you have a modern i5 / i7 / Xeon E3 in your system. Of course the 1070 will last you longer. I imagine you'll be playing more towards the high end vs the ultra end on the most graphically intense games with a 480 by the end of the year when the Christmas season of games releases, while you should be solidly ultra on the 1070 this year and probably all of next year too, as the 1070 is in a performance tier solidly above the 480/390/290/290x/970 tier.
