I've been looking at a lot of videos of the RX 480 benchmarks and i have to say, i'm not as impressed as I thought I would be. They said it would rival the R9 Fury and the GTX 980, but it is in par with the GTX 970 and the R9 390 and even a little less more powerful. It could be the fault of the drivers since the card is so new. What are your guy's thoughts??

Personally im also dissapointed since the RX 480, R9 390, and the GTX 970 are all about equal. In Canada all of them are about the same price which is very dissapointing.

I agree. Its a great price to performance ratio and being able to get a card with 8gb of VRAM for about 230$ USD is like unheard of and its the first we've ever seen. It's no doubt good for the money, but it's just not as powerful as AMD advertised and I think a lot of the PC gaming community (including myself)  are disappointed that it doesn't have as much power as they said it would.

Depends. DigitalFoundry showed that under DX12 the 480 is above a 980 due to A-sync shaders

yeah but what about shitman tho..the 480 is better in that game...it's slower in the 253 other top most popular games people actually play but who care?

Yes, because clearly we will never get more then 7 DX12 games. It will only be like Ashes, Gears of War,  Warhammer, BF1, Deus EX, Hitman and Rise of the Tomb Raider.

Then we will move to DX13, and go back to non-async compute workloads, heavy on tesselation and explicit single core CPU drawcalling.

Because we all know that is how we get better games. Nvidia is telling us it is. Intel is telling us it is. So it must be true.

I cannot wait. 2019, the year when you can get a i3 8100 or whatever + GTX 1260 and play at 8k MAXX details at 240 FPS while streaming using CPU.

Honestly it seems like it's nothing special to me. It's the same cost as the 979 for slightly better performance. It isn't competive with the 1070 or the 1080, but rather competitive with the 970.very underwhelming performance.

Game is using Gameworks. No tesselation is not the factor.

The reason it loses is simple. Hardware.

Rasteration Operation Processor. R O P

Nvidia GTX 970 has 56

AMD R9 390 has 64

RX 480 has 32

simply put, it is ROP starved when faced with the kind of workloads that is presented in said game.

Now, i know you arent one for technical talk. You seem to avoid it as much as possible. But i must ask if you have heard of Frame Timing? Do you know what it means for the end user?

I will assume no. so i shall explain.

CmIBi-vUoAABSDl.jpg

Earlier, Scott Wasson (who works at AMD atm) posted this on Twitter. Now, what is this graph?

Well, that is the consistency of frame delivery. The more spikes the more stuttering you have. Be it micro or blatantly obvious. Now you may argue that "scott wasson is an AMD employee. He rigged this". And to that i would call bullshit. Not because it may not be true, but because the software suit we now use to test and record frame timing issues WAS MADE BY NVIDIA WITH THE HELP OF SCOTT WASSON. Yes... The software used to test these cards are made by Nvidia. And Nvidia used it to great extent mocking AMDs 7000 and R 200 series for stuttering issues. Which made AMD improve their latencies and rebuild their drivers to reduce latencies. (thanks Nvidia. you made AMD cards better by making fun of them).

If the RX 480 is this well optimized to prioritize frame CONSISTENCY, even at the cost of FPS, then it will ultimately be a more pleasing experience. The worst thing ever is stuttering. Doesnt matter if its Nvidia or AMD cards causing the stutter. IT IS HORRIBLE.

Exactly. It's more for the mid-range gamer i think and lower high end gamers might be a bit of a stretch. Im going to make the assumption that most of us here (including myself) have cards that outperform the RX 480, and maybe thats why we see it as a bad deal or card or whatever but in relaity its OK. Its nothing special, but its not complete garbage either

The drivers needs to be better optimized for this new card and I am sure that AMD is working on some new drivers and I am sure that we will see better performance from it soon. That is just how AMD have been for the last couple of gens, they look not very good when they launch, but later they will be better.

yeah we saw that with the Fury X launch....was 15-20% slower than the GTX 980ti/titanX...and now...one year later it's...wait...15 to 20% slower than a 980ti/titan X

''wait for drivers'' they say that all the time...''wait for the RX480'' yeah...they say that all the time.

...wait for ZEN...yeah you know o.O

or we are just not the segment this is meant to be sold to, I am for one not, I want the best of the best and I could care less who makes it. The 480x is going to be great for people on a budget.
