RX480 or used 980 ?

BMW_X6_50i

Hey guys, so like 99% of todays topic, i have a simple question.

I can get a RX 480 for 260€ (in france) or i can get a used 980 for 280€.

Next week i'll go get my HTC Vive, so i need that sweet 90fps.

What card would you recommend more ?

I think the choice is obvious (980) but having advice is always good.

I suggest you wait for the cheaper 4gb version of the 480, then go for that. The 980 is more power hungry and more expensive as well as used and the performance is not that far off.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

You could also wait and see how the 1060 performs (supposively coming out on the 7th), but yes a 480 vs a 980 is no contest in favor of the 980 based on the benches I've seen

That's what i thought, but since i don't have a graphics cards anymore (sold my 7990 in a fucking day, it sell way faster than i anticipated) i'm running the HD Graphics 530 master race, so i can't really wait around too much you see.

I think i'll go 980, i mean power consumtion and heat can't beat a 7990 ahah.

For 280 Euros, a used GTX 980 is much better value since it is about a graphics card tier faster.

The 980 is about 10% faster than a 970/480, and not in all scenarios. It was never good value to begin with. In this case, if he waits for the 4gb 480 he could get it for 50 bucks cheaper (or even less, depending on the actual price) than a used, less efficient and only slightly faster card, not to mention drivers will probably get better in time for the 480 whereas the 980 pretty much had its run. Therefore I suggested to buy the 4gb 480 when it launches. The facts are available for everyone, I can only give him my opinion.

Right now GTX 980 will get you better performance.

But RX 480 will come with custom PCB and cooling too.

Sapphire might make some nice version of that RX 480, and it could acctually be faster than GTX 980 in general.

But at this point it's kinda hard to tell, how will RX 480 perform vs GTX 980 after few months and when custom PCB or binned card comes out :)

The 4GB 480 has already been released (And sold out) in Australia so I assume it is available in other countries that have the 8GB Card.

But anyway, I don't feel like a slightly higher power consumption is a bad thing, I also think it is worth spending the extra money on a GPU that is about 17% faster, the extra $50 doesn't matter that much, I personally regret not spending the extra $50 to get a R9 280x.
