Building a server inside a desktop case.

Dear community, 

 

I was stupid and bought myself a server board and after long consideration and frustration i have decided to either throw away the 300 euro server board or put it inside a desktop case somehow. Returning the board is not an option.

 

The server board i am talking about is the intel S2600GL > (http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/motherboards/server-motherboards/server-board-s2600gl-gz.html) + 

 

I have TWO problems, (the rest of the problems like cpu, gpu, etc is taken care of):

First problem, what case should i use ( i know there are no desktop cases for this board but i need something that fits it and i can mod easily to make this work) board is 16.5 inch by 16.5 inch (41x41cm)

Second problem: The power supply, i have no idea how to get the cables for this board, with a lot of help from others i have figured out that this board uses a 50 pin connector which only intel uses for their boards, now my first problem was that i needed a power supply for this board but after some research i found out that this was not the problem, its the cable i need. Lots of people sell Redundant power supply's but they never state that they give cables with these power supplys that have the 50 pin connector( YOU CAN'T FIND ANYTHING ON THIS MYSTERIOUS 50 PIN CONNECTOR WTF?). So i need either a redundant intel power supply with cable or a cable itself i can put into the power supply( i only just recently found out that the cables that go with a power supply are not actually attached to server psu's).

I got the board and fits nearly perfectly in an old desktop case i have. Even the gpu and psu can be at the correct places. I only have to make a custom plate for the motherboard to screw into. I never realized that this board needed a slide in PSU, so now i know what kind of power supply i need. BUT i still don't understand how to supply power to my GPU and CPU this way because it seems like these redundant power supply's don't have cables .,,,? 

 

 

New problem: BUT i stil don't understand how i am supposed to power my cpu's and gpu..

My suggestion: Return the board, buy an ATX server board (if you really need the features of a server board, else just buy a workstation board), and proceed from there. This board is meant to go in a blade chassis. Not an ATX case.

maybe get some scrap metal or metal from a hardware store and create your own case if you are willing to fabricate one. For the PSU i would say buy a sever psu.

There is no way of using that board with a standard case. Also something you need to take into account, the PSU connections are completely different. You'll need to buy specific PSUs. I'd suggest selling it and buy a workstation.

I know i need a specific psu and i can get my hands on it but i don't know if it comes with the power cables (50 pin cable), and also, i could buy the biggest case i can find and duct tape it to the backplate, but im looking for a better solution.

You have two options if you planned on buying a case; 

1) Do what @deansmylie1993 said and fabricate your own

2) BUY A BLOODY SERVER BLADE CHASSIS

If you say you could buy the biggest case you can find and duct tape it to the back plate, would it not make more sense to buy a chassis intended for this form factor?????

If i buy a server blade chassis i wont be able to fit my gpu's in there will i... thanks for the help though!!!

If you buy one that is tall enough, you can.

You cannot buy any chassis. You'll need to look at the motherboard. You can't just buy a chassis and expect it'll fit.

You need a server grade PSU. Most server and WS components have proprietary connectors and interfaces. Usually they are rated for longer use, more insertions, and higher bandwidth but cost way more and are harder to find. For the case you could do what linus did and go to a company give them dimension and cuts and have them make it. It will cost around $400-$600 though. I would suggest dual xeon WS board in a phanteks enthoo primo with dual PSUs and the hot swap mod for the bays in front. This would make a nice cool running PC.

I just don't understand how to get the cable to power up the motherboard as it doesn't come with a power supply i think?

Cut your losses and sell the board on EBay or Craigslist (or whatever options you have locally) and go get a desktop grade board.

Well your best hope is to get a psu that was built for it. You can easily convert a atx psu to work with these servers.
