Upgrading from Haswell to Skylake: Worth It?

Alright, so I've had my PC for about 3 months now.  It's great, but I think it could be better. I was wondering if upgrading from Haswell to Skylake is worth it? I'm considering upgrading from my MSI Z97 Gaming 5 1150 and i5 4690k to an i7 6700k.  I  mainly want to better architecture, the i7 Hyper Threading (which I know I can get in a 4790k) and then, mainly, the option of DDR4 Ram.  I really want to get my hands on some of that GSkill 4500MHz Ram.  Now heres my problem: I'm 15 so I don't have much money.  If I sell my CPU and MOBO I'll be like $100-200 off of this goal (not including the ram.  I'm scared to find out how much that'll set me back).  So, anyone know if this would be worth it in a gaming rig? (I'm going to be getting an RX 480 on launch day btw, if that changes anything).

CPU: Intel Core i7 6950x @ 4.2GHz Custom Loop: EKWB Supremacy EVO MX, XSPC 360EX, EKWB 140 CE, Corsair 280mm, '70 Camaro rad, XSPC D5 Vario Pump, EK X3 250 res, Primochill Advanced LRT Crystal Clear (7/16" x 5/8"), XSPC Compression Fittings, Distilled Water and Primochill Utopia GPU: Gigabyte 1080ti Gaming OC RAM: 48gb SK Hynix 2400mhz MOBO: MSI X99S Gaming 7 PSU: Corsair RM1000 Case: Corsair 750D Storage: Samsung 960 EVO 256GB M.2, 4TB Toshiba X300, 2x 1TB Toshiba P300, 1TB WD Skorpion, 1TB Seagate Apple HDD, 750gb WD Black, 4x Micron C400 256gb Monitors: Acer Predator X34P; LG 29UM58; Dell 2405FPW Keyboards: 1987 IBM Model M; Razer Deathstalker Mouse: Razer Taipan (Black) Mousepad: Razer Goliathus Speed (Large) Headphones: Meze 99 Classics

Not worth it at this point in time. You are gaming at 1080p i assume. The faster ram will not make a difference at all in gaming (unless you have an APU) its generally quantity. Overall stay with what you got, its marginal differences.

Have you over clocked your 4690K at all? Honestly there won't be enough improvement to justify spending the money so I'd wait until Kabby Lake or Cannon Lake come out.

Unless you are really pushing the limits of current technology (like mentioned above) there's no good reason to upgrade.  The cost would just be too much to justify for the performance gain (if there even is one).

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

Maybe get a better cooler and see if you can push it higher, then wait like others have said.

I'd go full out and get an H110i GTX as that's the best all in one water cooler on the market right now. The H60i won't give you much better results than the 212 Evo.

Will that fit in a mid tower with two top 120mm fan mounts? Or could I mount it with the front two 140mm?

Not worth it in the slightest. Rather than investing into skylake, you'd be better off investing into things like a better GPU than the 480, a monitor upgrade, better peripherals, better cooler...

No point in Skylake for you. Stick to your current system.

waste of money

if you can only afford a 480 why would you spend money on stuff that would get you less of an improvement than a better graphics card?

The RAM will give you ZERO real world performance. You hear me? ZERO. NOTHING. SO STOP FANBOYING OVER THE 4500MHZ IT DOESN'T ACTUALLY DO ANYTHING.

As for the CPU, unless you're doing serious video production you wont see any performance there either. CPU's are stupid. Take that money and buy a better GPU c'mon it's 2016. And DON'T FORGET ABOUT THE USED GPU MARKET. Serious bang for your buck there.

I'm still going strong on my i5-4460 with no intention of upgrading it anytime soon, and I'll be getting an RX 480 most likely as well. Unless you're doing really CPU intensive tasks and you need the performance gains such as hyper threading now, I would wait. Also I wouldn't opt for that RAM as the real world performance of the extra speed is basically nothing, you'd be throwing away money IMO.
