Port forwarding with different operating systems

I have a minecraft server hosted on an apple computer and im trying to access it on my linux mint computer. Previously i was using LogMeIn Hamachi but that doesnt work on linux mint so I wanted to know if there was something i could put into terminal to make the server link happen. Also dont suggest using my network ip because that makes the link only happen when both computers are connected to the same wifi network. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

well if you port forward it doesn't matter what machine/OS you use as long as it can play minecraft, if you port forwarded then anyone can put in the server IP and join.

that is my goal. I want to know how to port forward it.

@Legolessed i dont think you understand how to port forward a minecraft server, because if you do it correctly with your ip you can use it from anywhere in the world http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/archive/legacy-support/1728689-how-to-port-forward-your-minecraft-server-with

it tells you how to port forward. port forwarding is about your router not game, just allowing the needed port on your router the game uses to be active

yes you need a computer to do it, but OS doesn't matter as long as you can go in a browser on the OS

@Enderman thats what i meant, i meant that you typically change your routers port forwarding settings from a browser

So  to start off you'll need Minecraft's port is 25565 (that is if you haven't changed it) and the ip to the computer you're hosting the server from. All of this will be used later...

Most likely your routers ip is either 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1. Then you'll arrive at the login page to your router. If you don't know your login you might be able to find it here. http://portforward.com/default_username_password/

Once you're in your best bet is to find the firewall section cause that's where most routers hide the port forwarding section. If you need help with your specific router check out this link http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/routerindex.htm
