Audio Technica M50x crappy soundstage? Go with beyerdynamics?

Need headphones for most music genres, some competitive gaming (CS:GO I'm supreme rank), and sometimes outside the home.


Does the audio-technica really have that bad of soundstage that it's not good for gaming? If it's decent or barely gets the job done, then I'll be happy with it.


I am in a dilemma between the Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro (not plus) used in great condition with valour earpads
and the Audio Technica 50x brand new, both for $140 CAD. Which?

yes they really have no soundstage at all.

Before you buy amp and dac.  My thoughts on the M50x  Ultimate Ears Reference monitor review I might have a thing for audio...

My main Headphones and IEMs:  K612 pro, HD 25 and Ultimate Ears Reference Monitor, HD 580 with HD 600 grills

DAC and AMP: RME ADI 2 DAC

Speakers: Genelec 8040, System Audio SA205

Receiver: Denon AVR-1612

I'd get the Custom One Pro, they'll definitely be more comfortable.

the Audio Technicas are not for gaming, but they are for monitoring audio. That means you get a flat signature and amazing audio quality. For someone with your level of skill the Audio Technicas wont be for you, casual gamers and Music lovers will enjoy them though. I dont play games that require me to hear footsteps or anything like that (I play games like Star Wars Battlefront, World of Warships, Star Trek Online, etc.) They will get the job done, but if you really want that soundstage (I dont get what everyone says about it but I might be biased) get the Beyers.

Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro (COP) is pretty darn good.

 

I have one and used it for a very long time until I had moved onto other open backed solutions.

 

And if you are not in for the flat frequency response, you can adjust the bass port located under the COP's cups to increase the bass response if you happen to like bassy sound signature.

 

It is very comfortable to wear, except that (like almost all closed backs do) it will get your ears warm, which is a primary reason why I had moved onto open backed solutions. So, if you do not get discomfort from warm/hot ear, then you should be fine with COP.

Before you buy amp and dac.  My thoughts on the M50x  Ultimate Ears Reference monitor review I might have a thing for audio...

I have heard the Audio Technica's at a friend and I own a pair of Beyerdynamic DT-770 Pro myself. The latter definitely has the better soundstage, but if you're really after soundstage then drop the closed-back and go for open-back.

 

The Sennheiser HD558 are popular amongst gamers and have great soundstage. Should be within your budget as well. I own quite a few headphones, including the beloved HD600 and HD650 but for gaming I always grab my HD558's..

I can attest to this, the HD 558 probably has one of the best sound stages in its price range.

I went with the Audio Technica's.

Yup. Barely any soundstage. I can usually hear footsteps but hard to pinpoint.

Still satisfied with them overall especially since I got a decent deal of $140 CAD.
