How to Download Youtube Videos Legally?

How can I download YouTube videos legally? I am not trying to reproduce it. I want to use it for education purposes. Just to inform and show a message?

There are add-ons or extensions that make it possible to download videos. I use two of them, both work with Firefox :

 

1. Download Youtube videos as MP4 : https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/download-youtube/

 

Very basic extension , adds a "Download" button under the clips which allow you to download one of the MP4 formats Youtube already has for each video (640x360, 1280x720 and some other resolution)

 

2. YouTube Video and Audio Downloader : https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/youtube-video-and-audio-dow/?src=api

 

A more complex extension, but still easy to use. It also adds a "Download" button under videos but allows you to select any format youtube has for the clip, including just video or just audio. With this one, you can also download 1080p HD video or 4k video, or just the audio track if what you're watching is a podcast or a music clip.

You can capture just about anything legally posted on you tube for personal reviewing or any other form of fair use (teaching, commentary, etc.). Commercial use or reposting is probably a no no.

 

Snapit is an option, there are many others.

There's no other "legal" way.
You can use extensions or scripts to do it though.

This script, that you can install with Greasemonkey (firefox) or Tampermonkey (Chrome) will add a download button on a video's page.

Does YT Red make it legal to download and use for another purpose? I thought it was just for offline watching.

 

There is no legal way to just download, use and show it. If you are doing that for personal use only, you can use basicly anything. If you are going to show it as part of educational thing (teaching/learning), you could be nice and ask permission from original creator. But as long as it won't be part of money making, sponsorship of any kind or such, you don't need to ask permission. The safe thing would be doing so. And always if you are going to publish your work. Always remember to give credit to original creators.

Out of curiosity though, can your isp differentiate between watching a video and downloading it using something like idm or any other browser download plugin?

Right click, insect find the video container or file, click it, opens in new windows click save as and there you go. Also all sites and video only work up to 720 because they audio is separate at anything over that unless the sites or extension just record the video, then the quality would be bad

I would hope not. And I don't think they care that much. If it would be massive data transmits, they could suspect piracy related torrenting. But downloading and watching stuff blends into normal internet usage.
