1440p display or GTX 1080?

I Hendrycks I

Hey, atm I have a GTX 970 and it's been running well on my 1080p display but I've been looking at getting a 1440p display for a while now. I was wondering if you'd recommend getting a 1440p screen like the Predator X34 and I'll stick with my 970 until the 1080Ti comes out or do I get the GTX 1080 and have a complete overkill GPU on 1080p until I can afford a 1440p monitor later on? I do have a Vive but every game I'm interested in playing is handled beautifully by my 970. My main concern is the framerate on 1440p with a 970 as I can't stand being below 50 FPS with at least High settings. Thanks in advance!

keep what you have now and save up so you can buy the 1080 and 1440p monitor at the same time.

I could do that but I don't normally make multiple big purchases all at once. Is there a known good 1440p that's cheaper than the X34 and then I could get a 980Ti once prices go down with the monitor to last me until the 1080Ti?

do you really want an ultra wide 1440p monitor or will a standard 1440p do?

How well do the games you play run when you do DSR to 1440p? I tried playing Witcher 3 with DSR to 1440p on my GTX 970 and the cuts I had to make to get to a consistent 60 fps were way too much for me. I'd rather have better lighting and better shadows over the 78% bump in pixel count and the better textures. Why not get a 1070 and a 1440p monitor?

I doubt the 980 Ti will get much cheaper, if at all, than the 1070 unless you're willing to buy used. And right now is a great time to buy a 980 Ti used with people selling them off to upgrade to 1080.

The real answer is... get both... high frame rates seems to be what the 1080 is good for, but you need the display to run it hehe. Catch 22 I'm afraid. Why don't you stay with what you got, (I know the buying itch is difficult not to scratch) save up for both, then get both at the same time, polaris might be out at that point and gtx 1080 deals MAY be a thing by then, monitor tech is moving pretty fast at the moment too, so for me, makes sense to wait and save. Nice position to be in though.

I have a BenQ XL2430T atm and I'd like to get something that's a true "upgrade" and will feel like a noticeable improvement. I've never even seen a 1440p monitor in person before but from what I've heard 27" is the sweet spot. I also won't be upgrading the display for years so I want something really good. After looking at some 1070 benchmarks I'll probably grab a 1070 and a 1440p monitor altogether preferably for the price of a 1080 in CAD$. I'm assuming the 1070 will do wonderfully in 1440p?

well we need to wait for the official 1070 benchmarks before deciding if it can do 1440p.

I say get the 1080 now if you can, and enjoy maxing out every game at 1080p, then get the 1440p monitor later.

I'm pretty sure you'll be able max out (or nearly max out) every game at 1440p as well.

Personally, I'm going with 2 1070s...I have a problem paying so much for one card. (500 US is my limit for a single card)

Ya I agree it's a lot for one card but I'd rather pay a bit more for 1 and not have to deal with the issues that come with SLI.

Around $500-600 Canadian for the screen if I get a 1070. I'm debating just grabbing a GTX1080 and having every game play around 144 FPS+ for years at 1080p aha

You just want 144hz? Don't care about Gsynch etc.?

If so.. I have the ASUS ROG MG278Q and it's amazing. I got it because Gsynch is way too expensive and this is still 144hz and 1440p.

Or getting a decent 1440p Monitor and GTX 1070 (or R9 480X or R9 490) is an option too...

I ended up grabbing the Acer Predator XB271HU. It's pretty damn amazing and I have a pre-order down at my local NCIX for an ASUS Strix GTX 1080. Honestly so stoked aha

Congrats, one of my friends just got the same monitor and it is a beast.
