Facebook and Microsoft team up to lay a massive internet cable across the Atlantic

Facebook and Microsoft are teaming together to lay down a fibre optic across the Atlantic Ocean for wider spread & faster internet connection for connected countries. Although this isn't the first time this has happened and it's not going to really affect the UK, I think this is badass for the countries it is affecting.

 

What's your thoughts?

 

• 4100 mile fibre optic cable
• capable of a 160tbps (terabits per second)
• from Virginia Beach in Virginia to Bilbao, Spain.
• Project name: MAREA (Spanish word for "tide")
• No comment on price yet.

I'm sick of having to use stupid Comcast for slow internet.

I used to live in England, where there is fiber-optic cable EVERYWHERE. OMG, the internet was so much better than it is in the USA.

i have about the same over a coax cable that doesnt even have connectors on it anymore.

Fiber won't roll out to my area as suburban Canada and monopoly on my area.

my isp actually has plans for more than gigabit, and its up in the air if they'll be bringing fiber into the homes or not. which would mean more than gigabit over coax. (which is theoretically possible)

actually, now that i think of it, this may actually "fix" the issues i'm having with connecting to middle and west USA based servers, seattle is like 500ms ping for me on a good day, because the node i have to pass trough on east is a bloated mess. in fact, its more reliable for me to hop trough russia to connect to seattle.

As far as I know, ISPs in the UK use fibre optic to transmit from the nodes to the boxes at the end of your street then either CAT6 or Coax from the box to your house. This makes it more cost effective and less likely for a customer to damage fiber optic lines. I think Coax is capable of transmitting at gigabit speeds though.

if your isp doesnt have a fiber backbone they're doing it wrong in 2016...

Comcast has rolled out 2Gb coax I believe, of course its only $400-ish per month

to how many 5 homes did they roll that out?

 

its like that company in NL that rolled out gigabit fiber... to a town of 70 people.

Aha, very true for most cases, but for the further to reach places either in super rural areas or far out in the countryside, people are still living off DSL. Often for people in the countryside, people's connection is satellite based for their village or phone based which is extremely slow. My friend lives outside our town and up till now he's been having >1mbps up and down. Not to say that Virgin isn't making an effort though, both them and BT are trying to further the coverage of fibre internet which is AWESOME! unfortunately some people don't care and are saying it's a waste of money, but that's neither here nor there.

I stand corrected, it was fiber but apparently it's available to 18M people.

my isp ran into some kind of short circuit in their brains and are replacing their *entire* network in rapid pace

 

if i recall they should be done in one or two years from now.

You can blame AT&T and Comcast for that pretty much 85% of the time. They've donated a lot of money to politicians over the years and have basically hand written bills for the local governments to implement that makes competition essentially illegal.

maybe rub some of that freedom of yours into your government-enforced monopolies.

They already have gigabit in my area but it's $300 without a bundle. Mine is $100 with included tv and home phone.

Here, I'm on the last block. There's only 2 boxes, one is for bell and one is for Rogers. I'm the only person on my street that uses Rogers and everyone else uses bell. 

Using cat5 in my house and coax from router to box as far as I know.

My school forces students to donate $5 once or twice a year.
