PCI-E x16 slots

I just noticed I plugged my GPU into the PCI-E x16_2 slot and not PCI-E x16_1 .. Does this make a difference?

It makes no difference at all. Even if the slot only runs at x8 speeds electrically you won't notice any difference.

Normally not. Sometimes the second slot is limited to 8x speeds, but that won't mkae a difference.

For your system, no, the 2nd slot still runs at x16, just like the first 1.

AMD 990FX has a total of 32 Gen2 lanes

990FX chipset ifself only has 32 lanes, it can run it at 2x16 or 4x8.

Nope. That is just the label applied to the different slots for identification.

 

If you have 4x USB 3.0 ports, it would be USB_3.0_1 and so on. No difference in performance, just for identification purposes

that is correct if you are referring to GPU lanes

 

on top of the 32 lanes for GPU

 

there is an extra PCI-E 2.0 x4 can be use for PCI-E SSD

 

another PCI-E 2.0 x1 for Wifi or USB 3.1 cards

 

the extra lanes you may see on certain mobo are provided by 3rd party chipset for extra SATA ports, etc

yea, I was just referring to the gpu lanes. not including chipsets. For Intel skylake, to say it has 36 lanes would be incorrect.
