GPU for maxing games @ 1080p60

patrickmacx64

I'm currently running a GTX 750 Ti and an i5-2500K. My CPU is still fine, and I've barely even overclocked it. However, I want to run games on higher settings at 1080p.

Would a GTX 1070 (or R9 490 when it comes out) be overkill for 1080p. I'm thinking I should just look for a GTX 780 Ti or a 970 on the used market. Thoughts?

I'd buy up a super cheap 980 in the coming weeks.

970 range of card is good for 1080, but a 980 would be icing on the cake IMO.

Get something like a 470 when it comes out, I'd say. It'll cost probably less than $200 and perform well.

Why not a new 1070? Cheaper than a used 980 if i am right and a (big) performance boost.

Honestly I don't think there is any such thing as overkill on the graphics card. Games get more demanding all the time. Even if a graphics card is "just right" for maxing games at 1080p, it has just enough power as you need, I think that is a very short term view and it will not last. Games released in the future will be more difficult to run, so as much breathing room as you can get is good if you want your GPU investment to last a while. Even my dual 780 Ti cannot maintain 60fps stable at 1080p on Witcher 3 max settings, even with Hairworks off.

Don't you mean the Polaris '480'? I could be wrong, but cards like the R9 270/270x and the R7 370 compete with the GTX 950, which is an entry-level 1080p card. It isn't going to max everything at 1080p 60FPS. In fact, on most current AAA titles, you'll see about 30-40 FPS at high settings.

Also, we have no idea what they're going to be called.

well, we will see when people start slinging 980's around and how much they will be asking.

But I'm assuming a 980 will be cheaper than a 1070 and if the goal is1080p 60fps. then you would not need more.

Dual 980Ti,s wow what cpu are you using have seen i7 6700K with a titan x a bit more powerfull getting 90 to 100 fps at 1080p.

Sure.

On the games I play, a 750 Ti maxes everything out at 1080p (most demanding is probably PVZ Garden warefare, KSP, or Rocket league) so I guess I'm not really a good decision maker for this.

3930K at 4.0 GHz. And I said dual 780 Ti, not 980 Ti ;)

I checked my benchmarks also, I was slightly wrong, it's only with Hairworks On that I drop below 60, with HW off it was around 80fps average.

There is currently a 980 for sale on newegg for $370.
But i'd wait for the actual 1070 benchmarks to hit the shelf before buying.

Assuming the GTX 1070 is at or around the performance of a GTX 980 Ti or Titan X (which seems to be a smart guess at this point), I'm going to say no, it's not overkill. Something on the order of a GTX 980 Ti is what you need to get games like The Witcher 3 (with HairWorks) or Rise of the Tomb Raider at max detail to 1080p and a solid 60 FPS. Most games today are not nearly as demanding as those examples, but you're probably buying this card expecting to still be playing games on it in two or three years.

I've been playing Witcher 3 recently at 1440p with SLI 780 TI's and haven't had any issues. Maybe turn down a couple of settings - I am almost always over 60 fps and the game looks amazing.

Then again, I don't set everything to max.
