So I've been hearing a lot of talk about Intel's new Broadwell-E line of CPU's, mainly the (supposedly) 10-core variant called the i7-6950X. (hah, 69) So I've been wondering... is this true? Will Intel really be having a 10-Core enthusiast grade CPU? Post your thoughts or comments below. Please add some evidence as random talk won't be helpful.

it's true and it'll cost 1500usd :D

iirc it's available for pre-order on ncix or smth (i remember seeing a thread that someone pre-ordered it for a VM)

It popped up on NCIX for like 20 minutes before disappearing and it was listed at something crazy like $2500.

But why 1500? Can't you just buy a 10-core Xeon for like $650?

You can overclock a 6950X, you can't on a Xeon, plus you might get one for $650 but you need ECC ram which is very expensive.

ECC isn't that expensive. And I'm not sure, but do you NEED ECC? Or can you just use normal DDR4?

Yah, it depends on the board and not the processor. So if you got a board that supports normal DDR4 then yah you can use it.

Yes, there will be a 10 core enthusiast CPU. Is the price at $1,500? Maybe yes, maybe no. All prices you see as of now are from estimated guess. Intel has not officially set a price yet. For $1,500 it might be possible as the first consumer 8 core just came out 2 years ago, the 5960X.  So it might take a few more generations before we get to see cheap 10 cores on the enthusiast side. For a cheap 10 core now, there are them Xeons.

When Q6600 first came out it was ridiculously expensive. The one after drop a bit but not much. It was the 2nd batch of YorkFields that really bought it to affordable price levels.

Umm you have that backwards. If the memory controller is on the CPU, then it is dependent on the CPU. All motherboards that use a CPU with support for ECC will support ECC.
