780 vs 960

Go to solution Solved by elago,

You could maybe find a cheap 970 from someone who's selling their card in anticipation for Pascal, keep looking around.

Hi All,

Im currently looking on Ebay to upgrade my GPU and some of the prices have got me thinking. I was looking originally for a 960 but after checking on other cards I found that for some reason the prices (auction only) seem very similar for the GTX 780 as the GTX 960 and I wondered why this was given the generational differences and what I presumed would be performance difference because of the generational difference but the price similarties have got me wondering. Are the two cards similar in  performance even though their different? I know the price doesnt necessarily indicate how good the card is or the performance I just found it a bit strange is all. Plus if a GTX 780 would give better performance I was wondering if I should go for that. I will only be running one GPU no SLI consideration involved.

Thanks in advance for your help

the gtx 780 should have more raw gpu horsepower than the 960 by quite an amount

but u know nvidia and their [cough] gimpworks [/cough][cough] driver nerf [/cough]

try waiting for new gpu to be released before buying a new gpu

also, i dont recommend buying second hand gpu, unless it's from a reliable source (ebay is not reliable at all)

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

get a R9 380, preforms better then either of those, but if you need to pick from those i think the 780 is better

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

The GTX 780 performs quite a bit better than the GTX 960. Even the GTX 770 performs quite a bit better. You will also have 3GB of VRAM on the GTX 780 and 2 or 4GB on the GTX 960.

The 770 is about equivalent to the 960, the 780 is better than that. Is likely you can get the 780 even cheaper if you look at a local classifieds site such as gumtree or Craigslist. I would recommend the 780.

Even the 770 beats the 960.

i would probably get it over a ebay 780 tbh, you never really know with those, also VRAM, i dont know how much a 780 has but it verry well might be faster tbh

Most likely 3GB, although there were versions with 6 GB I believe, they're pretty rare though.

Depends on the warranty etc, but the 780 should be substantially faster, though I would recommend waiting with getting a 380 because an R9 480 is rumored to have the horsepower of an R9 390X.

That is why I am planning get an AMD GPU next time.

AMD's graphic cards performs better in the long run.

Nvidia uses driver to nerf your older gpus performance in order to get you to buy a new one.

If it is not broken, let's fix till it is.
