G-Sync technology does not work with AMD or Intel GPUs. They only work with NVIDIA GPUs as of right now. FreeSync currently only functions on AMD GPUs.

Hello, so I'm not quite sure what's up with his g sync and free sync stuff. First of all, I want to know if g sync and free sync will only run with specific GPUs. For example will a g sync monitor work with an AMD GPU? or will g sync work with all GPUs?

G-Sync will only work with NVIDIA GPUs, FreeSync will only work with AMD GPUs.

You can still use G-Sync monitors with AMD GPUs and FreeSync monitors with NVIDIA GPUs, you just won't be able to use the sync feature and it will be like a normal monitor.

As it is right now, they will only work with its own technology. So G-Sync will only work on Nvidia cards, Freesync on AMD.

AMD = freesync

Nvidia = G-Sync

they cant use each other's adaptive sync technology

adaptive sync is a vesa standard not belonging to amd or nvidia. amd's implementation of adaptive sync is called free sync nvidia does not use adaptive sync and uses their own proprietary standard

So I have a 980ti by MSI I'm not sure if that is a NVIDIA or AMD or what?

you mean variable refresh because adaptive sync is a vesa standard only used by amd atm then yes

Yes, what you said xD ok thanks. I have one more question. does g sync really help that much? I mean if I was to buy just a regular monitor would I be ok or...?

G-Sync is a luxury, it is nice but you don't "need" it to have a good experience.

from my knowledge where g sync has the most impact is when you have almost 60fps frame rates but not quite like 45 fps or 50 fps and it makes it look more like 60fps or if you get 60 fps it makes it look like higher fps but less so improvement. and also it is desirable for the monitor to have a wider range for g sync to make more of a difference.

Yes they do

Gsync displays work with anything that has displayport output, doesnt matter what manufacturer

Just like freesync monitors can work with any GPU, intel, nvidia, or AMD

The variable refresh rate technology wont be enabled, but the monitor will work just fine

I meant to say the G-Sync technology, rather than G-Sync displays.

you know what we mean and there is little point to get a g sync display if you dont have an nvidia gpu

Clarity is good, people ask pretty commonly whether G-Sync/FreeSync monitors will work at all with the opposite brand, to many people it's quite believable that they wouldn't work at all, so it is good to be careful about our answers here.

Freesync is open sourced, and is firmware based. Though it's only for AMD cards.

Gsync is closed sourced, and is hardware based. Though it's only for Nvidia cards.

Freesync:
          Pros:

  • Open sourced
  • Firmware based therefore is a little cheaper than GSync
  • Does the Same things as GSync

he has an nvidia gpu so that wont help him much and he isnt asking which one is better

._. I didn't finish that post, posted by accident. I fixed it and made it more simple.

I also saw that OP said they have a 980ti...
