Hey guys! I want to build a gaming PC. I want a i5 6600 (locked version). I will be using a MSI H97 GAMING 3. But now on PC parts picker, I put the motherboard in, and now when I try to search for my processor, it does not show the i5 6600 or the unlocked version. When I realised that I had the "Enable compatibility filter" checked..

Is it a bug or can the i5 6600 really not go with the MSI H97 GAMING 3?

As stated, the sockets are different. H97 uses LGA1150, while the Core i5 6600(Skylake) uses LGA1151. They are not compatible.

ITS THE WRONG SOCKET PLEASE LISTEN MAN, ok sorry for that but relly, you need a something with a 1151 socket on it and the H97 chipset dosent have that socket, it has 1150. get a H105 board instead and is should be fine also get the 6500 instad because like stated its not worth the extra money to get a 6600 :)

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Do you know any H170 boards that take DDR3 RAM and not DDR4? My CPU cannot take DDR4 and I really want a cheaper board.. I already spent $300 over my budget limit..

The DDR3 board aren't cheaper unfortunately, and the i5 6600 (though the i5 6500 is better in terms of value) does take ddr4 by the way.

your CPU can take DDR4 and DDR3L (low voltage DDR3)

there are B150 boards that take DDR3L, just filter them out on pcpartpicker

Erm yes, the i5 6500 does use the same socket as the i5 6600.

Officially, Intel does not recommend the use of normal DDR3 on a Skylake CPU due to voltage. Now people can say whatever they wish, but Intel does not recommend the use of normal DDR3, so if you do go with a Skylake DDR3 based board, use DDR3L.

No.

k in conclusion:

the i5 6600/6500 will only fit in B150, H110, H170 and Z170 motherboards thats LGA1151 socket

some motherboards allow DDR3L, not DDR3, they're different and using DDR3 will damage the skylake's imc in the long run

DDR4 is prefered for skylake

any board that fits your bill should do just fine

make sure its the right size and have the ports you need and you're golden

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

Alright. I am going to redo the RAM, motherboard and CPU. When I am done can I send the specs to you and can you tell me if everything is good? :)

You can certainly send the specs to me for verification.

Ignoring the fact you can easily hammer 1.8V Through DDR4 On skylake, same as DDR3.
