Have you tested if you have a much better connection to the Router using ethernet? If so, go with the cable. You shouldn't get much if any signal degradation at that length.

I have tested with a steam download

wifi - about 300-400 mbs

Ethernet - 600 mbs

unless your cable is 100+ m there will be no degradation

A 10 meter cable won't be any problem. It's not until you start getting 100 meter cables that you will run into issues related to length (or if you buy a really shitty cable that's like 50 meters).

If the router is only 2 meters and you are still getting poor Internet connection wirelessly then I recommend you troubleshoot your wireless before starting to run cables. Try changing wireless channel, try restarting it, try with a different computer, move it around and see if that helps. Using a cable might solve the issue, and I would recommend you use a cable whenever it is possible, but you should probably try and get your WiFi to work before doing that.

Ehm... 300Mbps over wireless? That is by no means slow. Anyway, it will probably be pretty hard to get faster WiFi speeds than that, so if you want more you will probably need a cable.

I suppose if you really wanted wifi, you could get a wireless usb dongle. Why do you need the benefit of 600mb over 400 anyway? Do you have, like, 5 instances of porn torrenting at once or something?

According to this article, and I'm assuming it's using the ac standard, you're probably just at the limit of the latest wifi standard speeds. And that's based on "real" world speeds.

The real problem with wifi is all devices on wifi are considered one port.  With wired your xbox will be on one port, your laptop will be on another so there is less contention.  I had a ps3 that i connected wirelessly that was very slow online. Once i plugged in it was much faster.
