What material would you be listening to? Movies? Music? Games?

Would it be a purely desktop setup? How do you intend to connect the equipment?

How much is your max budget? How much space do you have?

These things will help the other readers provide a useful suggestion.

Buy these speakers now... http://www.svsound.com/products/prime-bookshelf That puts you decently below your budget

And add this sub when you can swing another $200 http://www.svsound.com/collections/sealed-subwoofers

Oops yes. I meant to link to the SB-1000.

SVS is decent as a means to get your feet wet into entry level "audiophile" (or higher quality audio) gear.

This will take more effort to configure, but you can set your computer to upmix two channels to 4 channels by software. You can then apply a low pass filter on a pair of channels and a high pass filter on the other pair. This would allow you to integrate a pair of active monitors and a sub well without external equipment.

$800 can be spent on maybe a pair of Fluid Audio FX8s (or any other good pair) and a decent sub (JBL ES250P or better).
