So as if tere wasnt enough variants of kindle e readers amazon are back at it again (with the white vans!) with the kindle oasis and while theres nothing gamechaging about it really the one thing that struck me is that they are offering either a wifi verison or a wifi + free 3g version thats right for an extra £100 you can have 3g connectivity that they will pay for guessing they did a deal with EE or O2 here in the UK and probabbly AT&T in the US

i know this is probably uninteresting to most people i just thought it was neat they where offing to pay for the 3G for you how long that will last who knows?

I guess that could be nice for some people, but I can't really think of a scenario where id be desperate and need 3G to download a book.

i think its because and i have found this when buying one for my mom a few years ago for mothers day that a lot of people struggled to hook it up to the wifi as the touch screen is pretty bad and inaccurate thus making typing long stings of random digits in a massive pain in the ass so the highlighted feature is you just turn it on and it just connected straight away right out the box or that's what they seem to be aluding to on the store page

I thought it seemed alright until I saw the price. What the hell? 270 pounds for an ebook reader? That's not the 3G model either. 270 pounds (~385 USD) for an ebook reader. No color display, 4GB of storage.

The Paperwhite is a way better buy for anyone who wants an ebook reader.

I got the Paperwhite in Dec and was afraid the rumors of colored e-ink and stuff would be true but feel a bit better now. But +$200 is a little overkill for just an e-reader, especially since their isn't that much of a difference between the models.

I do like the cool cover/battery combo (MONTHS of battery?!?!) and how they off-centered the screen for more hand space and buttons (the amount of times I dropped the kindle to my face while reading in bed...) but the PW is still the best deal.

The 3G isn't that much of a seller IMO since most people would download the books in advance. The thing can hold thousands of books at once, people should be stacking up! lol. Does this ver also have the 'special offer' bs?? Because at $200 it should be ad free.

See, 3G isn't worth the extra cost. Plus if you read the fine print, the 3G is only free for the ebook browsing/buying. If you search for other things or use the web browser they will charge the card associated with the account (at least in the US) data charges like any other data plan.

source: had a nice chat with Amazon support when I first go my Kindle and was a newb :3

Even though I would've been pissed, I kinda hoped for a colored eink version with equal or better battery. That way I can wait a year or so for Amazon to get the kinks out and then I'll buy it. I have some manga and colored comics I would prefer to read that way (currently I use the phone app to do it)

I don't really see the point in this Kindle especially for the premium price. The Voyager is already high end and the Paperwhite has basically the same display. Amazon could have at least made it water resistant.

They are heavily marketing the extended battery life of this reader but honestly do people read so much that the Paperwhite isn't sufficient?

Oh, I just use kindle store versions if available. If not, I just use the manga apps (the few good ones left :/)

After they updated the Paperwhite, the pricing made no sense. There hardly any differences between the models to warrant the price jumps. I read my PW 2-3 hr/day and it lasts me over a month per charge. Months, well cool, isn't worth +$100 more (I am a fan of the offcenter screen and handle but not premium pricing lvl fan). Who wouldn't be near a charger for more than a month anyway lol

The 3g thing isn't new the first kindle that came to Australia had it, and i'm pretty sure ever other kindle e-reader/e-ink (so not tablet) version also had 3g to d/load your books with. you could use google also, but that's about it no touch screen and an e-ink display means you can't do much apart from read.

EDIT: looking at wiki, I have confirmed this:

"The first generation Kindle

...

The device's Whispernet feature was co-designed with Qualcomm, and Kindle was the first device to include free US-wide 3G access to download e-books from Amazon's Kindle Store. Amazon did not sell the first generation Kindle outside the US"

If you scroll down to look at the comparison between models, it's almost 3 times the cost of a paperwhite and the only listed advantages are smaller size and longer-lasting battery. I mean, there's the special shape that doesn't really show up on a spec sheet, and having the included battery+cover helps up the value a little, but it doesn't seem worth the cost.
