i5 750 Overclock - Temps

Hello,

So, I've recently upgraded my PC to a Gigabye GA-P55-USB3 Mobo. I also got a i5 750. I heard that the 750 was a great OC CPU, and for the $40 I bought it for, I was sold. I've done some playing around, and I think I've found the sweet spot of a 3.4 ghz OC. This OC is on a stock Intel 1156 socket heatsink/fan. I idle at around 53-55 C. I've tried 3.5 ghz, and I ran at idle of 60-65c. That is a huge jump. I hit around 80-83c under load in Prime95, and around 77-80c on The Divison. Pretty solid temps for a stock cooler. My concern is, why is there such a big jump from 3.4 to 3.5 ghz? I was at about 96-99c at 3.5 ghz in The Division, and I was too afraid to try Prime95.

It would be great to get some OC advice!

Thanks,

Ricky

temps are related to the voltage your cpu is running at. If you need so much more voltage to reach stable 3.5 GHz than for 3.4 GHz, it is obvious that the temps are rising quickly.

But pls do your cpu a big favour and give her a good aftermarket cooler

Try changing your voltage.

Auto voltage uses too much sometimes and that causes more heat.

do not overclock with voltage set to auto, motherboards are too stupid to try low voltages and just ramps up the voltage to what it thinks is necessary and usually that is too damn high.

I do have the board set to auto voltages. I actually watched a NCIX video with Linus who overclocked an i7 8XX CPU, and he enabled the auto Vdroop. I tried that, and about 5C more in degrees. Turned the auto Vdroop off, and used just auto voltage, about 5c cooler. I will try playing with the voltages manually tomorrow after work!

Thanks for the comment!!

Update - I've played with the voltages, and I've got it at 1.145V's. A new max temp of 71C after 3 hours of playing The Division. 3.42GHz OC on my i5 750 and a stock cooler :D
