Hi guys I was interested in upgrading my cpu I have a 3820 on 2011 socket and in Switzerland and Italy prices for 3940k 4940k and extreme editions are like 500 to 1000 chf's/ euros for like 3/4 years old cpu's?

motherboards are like 400/600 chf:  maximus hero black and delux/ ws

I know that these are premium products and that they are new

But I mean prices should be lower in my prospective this is why I was skeptical of upgrading.

Are prices this high also in the US?

You can get the CPUs a bit cheaper but X79 motherboards are super expensive.

Intel doesnt drop prices, straight up.

Even they know there's virtually no difference in performance from generation to generation, so when a new one comes out it gets the premium tax, that's why the new cpus are more expensive; not because the older ones drop in price.

I thought that 2

I mean  6700k its like 300

I could get a 3930K on Ebay for $180 while the 4930K goes anywhere from $300 to $500. Motherboards typically don't go cheaper than $300.

Those aren't 'new' processors, OP. Depending on what you have now and what you're willing to spend, good i5 options are 4690k and 6600k and for i7 the 4790k and 6700k. However, if you're set on the Extreme series of processors based on what you posted, I would wait until the 6th gen of Extreme processors are released, the 5th and 4th gen series will drop in price substantially.

But, in most computer tasks, having less but faster cores (the first CPUs I mentioned on the 1150 and 1151 socket) are a lot more beneficial than the enthusiast extreme processors. For instance, I've overclocked my 6700k to 4.7 Ghz and it can tango with the 5820k and sometimes the 5930k.

To sum it up, if you want the enthusiast grade components, wait until the 6th gen variants are released. However, you will probably benefit from a consumer grade chip as well as paying less. Hope this helps!

You're right,  those 3rd and 4th gen processors should have had a greater price drop, however one of the reasons they aren't, is because 5th gen didn't improve THAT much. Other than a slightly higher clock, more PCI-e lanes and the X99 chipset, there wasn't an incredible amount of change.

Though, like I said in my earlier comment, it would be well worth it to wait further into this year for the 6th gen extreme processors to come out.

The 3930K and 4930K are not dropping rapidly in price because they are not dropping rapidly in value to their users.  I have a 4930K myself and do you want to know why I have no intention to upgrade for two years at -least-?  Because I have a 4930k and it's kinda AWESOME.  It will readily kick ass most any application that I throw at it and it'll handle any game so long as it's graphics card is kept up to date.  Awesome stuff doesn't lose value rapidly just because it's old and there's new products.  This has been going on since Sandy Bridge, where the CPUs still have great value and perform well.

Yup!  And the 2500K and 2600K actually hold a pretty decent value on the used market too.  About a 2500K goes  for about, *checks* $160 USD on eBay.  They were around $200-$220 when they the new hotness on the market.  I paid $198 CAD for one when they were new and that was five years ago.  That's a pretty strong hold on a CPU's value and it's because the CPU is still a strong performer.

3940XM and 4940MX exist, but there's no "K" and those are quadcore laptop chips.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.
