OC 960 same as 980?

So i just had a guy tell me that an OC'd 960 is the same as a 980...... My first thought was "there ain't no way in hell" but maybe i'm wrong.

 

Please clarify this for me.

Current Build: Core i7 4790k @ 4.6, Asus Maximus VII Hero, Corsair Vengeance Pro 2400mhz 8gb (2x4gb), GTX 980ti, NZXT Kraken X61, Fractal Define R5  EVGA Supernova B2 850w, Some 300gb hard drive.

Unless you overclock it to an impossibly high amount, then no - you/him are forgetting that the 960 has a significant amount of cores less than the 980.

This was exactly what I thought.

he's totally retarded, sorry but that guy has no idea, besides that the 980 defaults with 4 GB memory the 960 mostly has 2GB memory (an occasional one or two has 4 GB) but even if it had 4 GB memory there's still a huge gap.

 

unless you run your 980 without fans and have to underclock it to the lowest settings in afterburner and it gets throttled due to overheating :o

Lol, no.

If you are super lucky with your GTX 970 chip and comparing it to a bad GTX 980 chip, you 970 might reach the performance of a GTX 980.. But even than, the 980 greatly performs the GTX 970. So GTX 960 outperforming a GTX 980? Only if you HEAVILY OC the 960 and HEAVILY underclock the 980.

Your bottlenecked with the different core count/bus width/maybe vRAM so no never.

yes but you will have to like cool the 960 in like liquid nitrogen and then overclock it to an impossible amount, take off all the fans on the 980 and have it sit in a case with no air flow and underclock it to like 500 mHz.

whoever that guy is, is a fucking moron.

An OCd 960 cannot even match a stock 970.
