Hello!

Today's question I would like to have answered (personally or this topic may fill in some gaps for you) Is...

How does the AMD Product Rating System work(Based On Performance)?

I would love to have this question answered since many people that start out PC building, don't have enough information to make a decision on which products on AMD's shelf are better and cheaper or If they should go with AMD at all.

Some other questions i would like to have answered..

1. How do I judge which series of CPU's are better for my needs?

2. How do I judge which series of GPU's are better for my needs?

3. What is an APU?

4. Are all AMD's CPU's, APU's?

5. Which CPu is better for gaming?

6. Which CPU is better for work?

7. Which GPU is better for gaming?

8. Which GPU is better for work?

9. Should I get any other products for my PC build from AMD(Discluding APU/GPU/CPU)?

I would really like to here your response!

Cheers!

1.) Primarily reviews.

2.) See answer above

3.) An APU is a processor that combines CPU functions and GPU functions onto a single die. Intel meets AMD's criteria even though they do not call them APUs.

4.) No. FX CPUs for example do not come with integrated graphics and therefore do not meet the APU criteria.

The rest of the questions are subjective, and seem to be largely based on budget.

GPUs :

The the newer the range the higher the number eg it used to be 6xxx, 7xxx then they swapped over to 2xx then 3xx, next will probably 4xx

so atm its like 360 <370< 380< 380X (better 380 but not as good as 390) < 390 < 390X then the Fury < Fury X

it was 260 < 270 < 280 < 280X < 290 < 290X

to get more confusing the 280X was a rework of the previous top card been the 7970 and they did it again recently taking the 290 and 290X, adding extra vram and tweaking some stuff to make the 390 and 390X

PR is a performance number. For example, you can have an Athlon @1.3GHz which has a PR rating of 1600+. What it means is that Athlon will perform the same as a 1.6GHz Intel chip.

Other answers

1) and 2), look at benchmarks.

3) The APU is a CPU and an integrated GPU.

4) No. The FX series, for example, is not.

5), 6), 7) and 8), look at benchmarks

9) They produce memory and SSD's aswell, you can check those out.

yeeaaaaa no

not at extremely low end budget rigs

APU is still king for systems without a dGPU

answer

Spoiler

1) go youtube and watch benchmarks and comparisons between the cpu you're interested in

2) refer to 1)

3) a cpu with better integrated graphics

4) nope, their FX series are cpu without iGPU

5) depends on the game, but generally, an 6th gen i5 will be a good balance between price and performance

6) work as in...? if you use lots of thread, the 5820k is a good processor

7) depends on a few factors, resolution, game settings, and other factors. the best single gpu out there is the 980 Ti

8) depends on what software you use... probably a firepro or a quadro, but those are expensive and only for professional use

9) their gpu aint bad for mid tier

Wait, AMD even still USES that whole 'PR' thing still?  I thought their CPU and GPUs just had model series/numbers for brand identity that gave no real indicator of performance other than additional features (Like K = Unlocked, X= Kinda better than Non X) ect.  Just like Intel or Nvidia.

People come here to have their questions answered. Sometimes people look and don't necessarily understand what's being stated, and need someone to interpret for them. Especially from people who have more experience than them.

AMD still defines those processor types as APUs. Have you seen their somewhat recent marketing?

They don't use the PR thing anymore.  They stoped using it with the second generation Athlon X2's and on.

An APU is simply a processor that combines a CPU and GPU onto the same die. There's no mention of the quality of integrated graphics. It just needs to have them, and that means Intel's CPUs qualify as APUs.

What PR marketing are you thinking of though?

'Athlon XP 2500+' where '2500+' was it's 'Performance Rating' that meant 'Sure it RUNS at 1.8ghz, but it's as FAST as a 2.5ghz Pentium 4'.  This was AMD's approach to the 'Megahertz Myth' at the time and it was true, they were much better IPC than Intel's offerings at the time.  But I thought this branding had since been abandoned and AMD's current model numbering scheme is basically 'Mostly arbitrary, but things with bigger numbers of the same series are usually faster than things with smaller numbers!'.

Fixed. To be fair, the R7 265 slots in with the 370 and the 285 is literally an R9 380 with an extra 4GB variant.

They did abandon this methodology with the second generation Athlon X2's.  ie, Athlon X2 250.
