2x GTX 980 in SLI or 1x GTX 980 Ti?

I just upgrade my rig to the following: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/PpL3Vn

I already had the GTX 980 before I upgraded the rest of the PC (The graphics card is the only thing left from the old rig).  I game using a 144hz monitor that I left in the parts list.

My question is whether I should upgrage to a 980 Ti or just go with a second GTX 980 in SLI?  I have never done SLI before.  I understand that the performance of two 980's in SLI would likely exceed what a single 980 Ti could do, but I don't know if the inherent drawbacks of SLI would be worth it.  Any tips?

980 ti, sli is almost never worth it both money wise and due to powerconsumption.

I generally like my 980s in SLI, but I can understand why people want a single card instead of two.
In your case I would probably sell the 980 and buy a 980Ti.

What makes you favor the 980's in SLI over the 980ti?  I am looking to upgrade because I am finding that the single 980 is struggling to push 144 fps in several games that I play.  Edit: At ultra settings.

Do you really need all those fps? If not, I would advise you not to upgrade until the next generation of GPUs.

Well, I got the 144hz monitor because I liked gaming at 144fps...so I would say yeah.

But, if you're not some e-sports competitor who needs to practice at 144fps, I think it's more frugal to wait for a GTX 1080 or however they will call it.

It's not about the inherent drawbacks of SLI (Which I think are greatly exaggerated) but its that you're still stuck with 4gb of Vram, and 2x 980's really only come out relatively close to 1 980ti in terms of graphics power.

It's best to get a 980ti now, then when you can afford it, get another, if you need it.

Intel 5820K OC@4.7 / MSI Raider X99 / 32GB Corsair Dominator 3200mhz / x2 EVGA 980Ti Hybrid OC @1468 / Corsair Vengeance C70 (OD Green) / 2x Samsung 840 Evo in Raid 0 / Corsair RM1000x / Corsair H110i GTX  - Firestrike Score – 26156 (so far, lol)

When I bought my 980s there weren't any 980Tis, that's why I have two of those.
Also they just perform a ton better.
