Switch to a better ISP or upgrade your bandwidth

Move the modem as close to the service entrance in your house that is about all you can do (not going to do much but if there is a problem with your wiring inside your house it might help) aside from finding another provider.

 

Note upgrading your bandwidth will probably not help at all.

Use cable it should be better if you have that as well maybe even a 4G service (it will have data caps).

 

If you use the same physical wire there is going to be no improvements.

Cable isn't available where I live, I live in a rural area.

You get whatever you pay for, unless there is something wrong. Are you getting lower speeds than what your paying for? If so, we can troubleshoot that, if not, then your only option is to upgrade to a faster plan.

Also note with 4G you may get better speed (possibly even much better speed) if you are within good signal areas but you will be limited by data caps restricting how much you can download/stream. You probably also would want a mast mounted antenna and booster as that can make your signal much much better.

At the speeds reported they can probably use the lowest speed plan they are down in the physical limitations of ADSL.

I live like 4 miles from the exchange and my internet is unbearably bad is there anyway I can improve it without moving closer to the exchange?

If you want faster speeds, you'll need to pay for an upgraded plan from your ISP. Otherwise you are limited to the amount your ISP says you can have.

by looking at your speedtest results , your isp seems to be bt global services, do you have any bills from them?

How do I know what plan I have? I asked my parents what we have and all they said was 'unlimited broadband'

The plan should list the speed you get for the "unlimited broadband". It is listed as an mbps.

 

On their site it lists that plan as having "upto" 17mbps.

unlimited broadband just means you can access unlimited data with no overage charge(as in gigabytes, terabytes, etc), its doesnt apply to the speed, though if you are getting that kind of speed i wouldnt call that "broadband"

key words are up to. Meaning the company can give you anything less. You might be better off switching providers or upgrading your plan in this case. There's no setting changes you can make to your networking setup to improve this speed.

Well if you look at that graph I linked in they are talking about people <3km getting ~17mbps.

 

If you want more speed but are ok with datacaps (overages potentially as well, be careful on that bit) 4G potentially could be much faster and if your willing to mount an antenna to your roof you can probably get excellent signal even if your very far from the cell tower.
