There is over 30% difference. If you have 60 FPS now you will have 40 FPS on 1440p, plus possible VRAM problems in some games, especially in future. If you think that you will need 1440p monitor in future or you want to buy something that will last you for long, you can go for 1440p monitor, but you will also have to sell your 970 and upgrade to enjoy smooth gameplay in more demanding games. There are new GPUs coming in few months so this will be good moment for GPU upgrade.

1440p is nice upgrade, especially if you go for 27 inch screen, but this resolution is demanding.

Hi

I currently own a gtx 970 gigabyte extreme edition. I am planning to get a new monitor. I currently have a 1080P monitor and I am thinking about moving up to 1440p monitor. I am just a casual gamer. I don't play games that competitively. I just play like GTA V and other FPS games when I have a break time. I like picture quality. I just it play it for fun. Will my GTX 970 suffer with the 1440p monitor?

You will have to turn down settings and live with 50-ish fps

970 definitely works better as 144Hz 1080p gaming card rather than 60Hz 1440p.

So I would take 144Hz 1080p monitor instead.

Maxed out 1080p > medium to high 1440p

Go for 1080p, this card isn't the right one for 1440p, because of the 3.5gb Vram and generally too low power for max 1440

1080p, there is no point on going to higher resolution just to lower graphics settings. Upgrade to higher resolution only if your PC overkills your current resolution.

The difference in picture quality is low, but the difference in pixels is high. 1440p has ~80% more pixels than 1080p. That doesn't translate 1:1 to performance, but it gives you an idea of how difficult is it to drive. To get a good experience at 1440 I'd say get at least a 390X or a 980. If you want to crush it get a 980ti and call it a day, or wait for the next gen cards. There will likely be a better solution at a lower price point.

my 290 handles 1440p just fine, a 970 will easily do 1440p

I run most games ultra-high with little to no dips below 60fps (you'd really have to look for the detail difference between ultra/high imo)

my advice, get a gsync 1440p or 1080 120hz+ gsync
