Can I use a second router to extend my wi-fi?

EvanClarkPDX

DON'T mean a wireless connection to another router to increase distance, here's what I do mean:

I have a fairly large house and my new room has pretty crap wi-fi in it from the router downstairs. I have an Ethernet cable routed through the house up to a "play room" sort of area, one room over from my room. Is there a way to use that Ethernet cable to basically make another access point that leeches off of the router downstairs?

Thanks!

Yes there is.

I'm not sure exactly how, though.

You'll have to connect this router to your network and go to its gateway to configure it as an extender

Good luck.

You can setup a bridge mode for the second router as an access point. That would give you an extra connection in the play room area where you can either setup the unit as a completely separate access point to let you choose which one to connect to or one that your devices can roam between the two.

you're looking for a thing called a repeater (correct me if im wrong, not a network person)

most routers can become a repeater :D but check before you buy

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

Bridge mode and access point modes perform different functions. What he wants (by the sounds of things) is the access point mode. Most likely set up with the same SSID to enable roaming between the different APs.

What he's looking for is an Access Point. While it can be used to achieve the same goal as a repeater, they're generally more reliable and provide better bandwidth than wireless repeaters do.

A lot of routers have options to function as an access point, but even those that don't have dedicated options can have their routing, NAT and DHCP functions disabled to become access points for the most part.
