3 pin fans can be voltage controlled instead of PWM controlled

the motherboard needs to have built in voltage control though

if the motherboard doesnt then speedfan cant do anything

You can use MSI's Command Center to make fan curves. It uses percentage of speed, not direct rpm readings. This is same with both PWM and DC control. With DC (3pin) you have few more limiting factors. Like higher starting rpm (usually 40% of full speed aka 5V). And it adjusts with bit jumping, not smooth like PWM would.

Do you have the exact error message? MSI's Z97 Gaming 5 product page shows it as supported, and it works without issue on my MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition board.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

I've used it on same mobo that you have. It will work. Download latest version from mobos own support page. If still errors, update BIOS.
