i have a raspberry pi 2, and i have a spare 1 tb hdd, will it work if i buy a sata to usb adapter and voila nas?

Is it a 2.5" or a 3.5" drive? 2.5" drives should work just fine as they can draw enough power from the USB port but unless you try you can't really be sure. 3.5" drives need additional power from the outside in order to work (as on any other device). 
Also have in mind the OS that you are using on the Pi and the appropriate file format of the drive.
