Radeon HD 5850 Fan Issue

A few days ago the fan on my Radeon HD 5850 started making strange sounds and has stopped spinning correctly. It idles most of the time but tries to start up once it gets too hot but ends up starting/stopping repeatedly.

Here's a video of it trying to spin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnaRn3JjEiY

I have no clue what is wrong with it so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the Forums!

From the sound of it the bearing on that fan is done and causing far too much resistance for the motor to keep it going, there isn't much that can be done for that fan but to replace it. Looks like things could also use a cleaning :P

Haha yeah it's a bit dusty in there. Is it worth trying to oil the bearing on the fan?

You can try oiling the fan, but even if it will fix the issue, it will only be temporary

Depending on what type of bearing is used on the fan, you may be able to disassemble it, and service it. In other cases, you may have to just replace it if the bearing is completely done.

When the turbine fan on my 5850 went I thought my neighbor was using some kind of chainsaw or power tool, literally.  I had to walk close to the PC to narrow down the source of the sound... so damn loud.  I had a spare cooler assembly, so I just replaced the whole thing.

I doubt that oiling will fix it due to the grinding sound it's making, if it was a slight ticking that might be fixable but it looks like it's too far gone unfortunately.
