Do i need a GPU for this? Or is onboard good enough?

trainergames

Ok i am build a pc out of old parts to use as a music/video editing system,i do not know which programs i will be using yet,if something is rendering on it i will just leave it be and plays games on my other pc until it is done.

The motherboard 2 ports(1xDVI 1xVGA) and uses Intel GMA 3100.

I could use the PSU(500w w/1a on 12v rail) i already have in it and use some old GPU's( 7900gs 256mb, ati x600 256mb ,hd 3870x 512mb, hd3650 1gb)

Or i MIGHT be able to yank a chepo 600w that is in another system, and use a GTX 460 SE 1GB that is not being used..

Or is any of this worth the trouble? And will onboard be just fine for it?

The system has an e8400 and 8gb of ram.

The problem is if you don't know what software your running we don't know what specs that software needs. Could u give a rough idea what software u are considering???

Your CPU has Intel HD 4600 which is good for Intel HD graphics but still realy sucks. It is better to just spend 100 - 150 dollars on a dedicated GPU if you are going to be video editing.

Sorry i had to drop what i was doing to quickly run to the store.

For music someone suggested fruity loops, i don't know of any others that i will end up trying, but for video editing people suggested i try  lightworks, hitfilm 3 expres, PowerDirector and blender.

I will try each and see which works best for me.

The thing is i have no budget, and am only using parts i having lying around.

Would GTX 460 SE 1GB be good enough? But the only PSU i have with enough amps on the 12v rail is a cheapo 600w that is over 5 years old.

hmmm, your gtx 460 should be good but i would get a new gpu, like the gtx 960 or 950 for example for more horsepower
