Hey guys,

i have a 8 (16 hyperthread cores) core server, that im using for mainly jsut Folding@Home, and my plex media server. I have so much un-used compute power, and I was wondering about if there were any interesting programs i could play around with that use a lot of cores.... any ideas??

I like Computer Stuffs. Have you tried unplugging it and plugging it in again? Automation Expert (Bots, scripts, etc)! Add me on Xbox Live: JollyPlanet449 And on Steam!: Baxtmann Wanshow.tips is a cool place too

you could use it as a rendering server with autodesk maya or blender

Its a server with the worlds worst integrated graphics lol. No GTA5 xD

Host me a minecraft server :P
You'd only ever need to dedicate a 4th of what the machine is capable of lol

Or yeah, rendering is cool I guess and folding@home is always a good cause.

You could make a few VMs so you can have multiple thin clients around the house. Saves power and the clutter of having multiple PCs around the house.

Funny story about minecraft, the integrated graphics are unreconized by Minecraft lmao

Why do you have a dual cpu server that you are not using?

Heh, cause my work got rid of a bunch of old servers, so i "borrowed" one lol

Fair enough. Personally, I would run a game server off it.

You are running folding@home and still have unused compute power? You could always just have it run harder, for the good of humanity that is :D

Also I agree with running a few servers for you and your friends. You could also run a web/mail server, or a server that lets you access your nas files from outside the network.

If you still need something to put it to work, having a look at the encryption/compression options of your nas software is always worth it, as both saving space (and therefore real $ worth of harddisks) and securing your data is great, and only heavily depends on the compute power to do them in real time. (Depending on the hardware I have seen scenarios where the nas transfer speeds were limited by the harddrives, and compressing the data actually made it go faster :D)

Who puts a GPU in a server? let alone a quadro. Unless you're running something like a citrix farm or a rendering farm

Lol just for the lols.

http://boinc.berkeley.edu/

(ok, this is quite similar to folder@home... maybe a little more generic)

you can also learn to configure some software such as HTCondor ( https://research.cs.wisc.edu/htcondor/ )

for setting up your own computing pool (not sure it's so easy to join existing pools without BOINC, which can be "plugged" in  HT Condor as a fall-over for CPU time)

HT Condor can be used to parallelize all kind of computations that are addressed from "command line utilities with parameters" (and more)

Also, what kind of internet connection do you have to this machine ?
