i5 2500k (Ebay) vs I5 6600k (Newegg)

The 2500k is $175 and the i5 6600k is $245 so is it worth the extra money? The graphics card that I'm getting is the r9 380x, if that helps.

You also have to consider finding a board for the 2500k. Unless you have one lying around you're at the mercy of Ebay/Craigslist as well, and a good condition one probably isn't going to come cheap.

Go for it. The 6600k is significantly better.

You would have to consider the price difference between DDR3 and DDR4, but DDR3 and DDR4 are around the same prices anyway.

There is the Xeon E5 2670. It has 8 cores and 16 threads. It is only about 70US on Ebay. I use one in my system. The X79 boards will cost you about 200US though.

personally I would go with the 6600k because its faster and much newer. It will be much better longer term.

another issue is finding a fully-functional mobo (P67/Z68/Z77) without upping a kidney, only to realize it'd been easier to use new tech and get ahead of the older crowd.

It just screws with my head that a 2500k can go for $175 even now.

That's about what I paid for my 2500k 4 years ago.

Intel CPUs are like Nintendo games, the damn things just never go down in price no matter how long they've been out.

6600K no question. The 2500(non-K) is the same performance as an i3 6100 so an i5 6600K will carry a good 50% performance improvement if not more

6600K, much greater IPC, DDR4 increases performance in some games.

  • 1 month later...

I have to say, two days ago I found dirt cheap mobo + i5 2500k combo for only 120$ (here in Bosnia), for my brother, i just need to get 2x4 GB of DDR3 (to have dual channel) which shouldn't cost more than 30$ (in my currency). When i looked at that advertisment, i just couldn't help it, had to buy it.... The motherboard is asus p8h67 rev. 3.0 :D At this moment of time, no chance i would go for the overpriced 6600k, even if people sold it as used :) IMO, the 2500k is the best cpu of all times :)

Here's us testing it out, if everything works fine, and it did. I still can't believe we were so lucky to get this deal....

What memory modules would you recommend since the cpu supports up to 1333MHz DDR3 only?

Yeah, exactly that - some games (maybe those that support dx12, but we have to wait and see the real impact of DDR4)...
I've read many articles (tom's hardware; techspot; etc...) saying that there isn't any difference between 1866Mhz DDR3 and 2133MHz DDR4, concerning the impact in most of the games.

1. http://www.pcgamer.com/the-differences-between-ddr3-and-ddr4-ram/

2. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/asrock-fatal1ty-z170-gaming-k4-d3-ddr4-vs-ddr3,4431-2.html

GRID2 for example utilises the CPU to RAM bandwith much better. Most other games show not-so-significant FPS delta.
