Hi all,

So I think I am going to upgrade my motherboard soon and I really like ASUS motherboards and of course I really like their ROG boards (who wouldn't right?) But the thing is they are very dear. Now the two boards that I'm either going to get are the Z87 - Deluxe or the Maximus VI Formula (I would get the Extreme, but that is way too expensive and no way would I use all of its features) The thing I was wondering is if I really need an ROG board and all of its features? I'm not a heavy overclocker by any stretch of the imagination, I don't water cool and I use a USB headset with a built in sound card, so is the ROG board worth the extra money or would I be better off just buying the Deluxe? Also the Deluxe does have a thunderbolt connector, doesn't it?

Thanks in Advance,

Paul.

Straight answer from most people here: No unless you got the money.

Buy a motherboard because of it's features or it's looks. With current platforms if you're not doing this then you're wasting money. If you don't know if you need the features on the ROG then you probably don't.

I'm pretty sure the Deluxe doesn't have Thunderbolt, only a connection for the Asus TB PCIe card that Intel hasn't verified (and therefore you can't buy).

Extreme is garbage and is for the liquid nitrogen overclocker, even so,the UP7 is a better option in that area, and since you are going all those things, no, don't get a deluxe unless you need it, go with the pro

Do you know what the main differences between the Deluxe and Pro are?

They are basically pointless unless your doing some crazy stuff. At the moment i cant justify buying an asus board at all for any reason. Gigabyte is much more trustworthy in my opinion

If you're not planning on sli/crossfire, you can just get the cheapest z87 mobo you can find.

Only the Deluxe Dual, Deluxe Quad, and Expert Z87 boards do.

P877-V for Z77 has Thunderbolt.

Also, considering you have a USB DAC, mATX boards could also be an option. You don't need an ATX board to get a very capable system any more.

Yeh I have an mATX board in my system just now it's just that it runs a really old chipset, but aside from that it does pretty much everything I want, but it would be nice knowing all the ATX features would be there for me if I needed them in the future

No unless you have the money or want to use it because it has what your color scheme uses

You don't really get a performance gain from getting a more expensive board (like a ROG one) unless you're doing extreme overclocking. Or unless you want the features.
