**warning - bad english may occur**

I just just recently in stalled a new server, (Ubuntu!!) and hell yeah, it was running great with 4 different game servers.

But today it happened.

I was thinking that the users I had giving permission to use my server, should be able to go out of their home directory. So I smacked up a "sudo chmod -R 750 /".

It didn't looked like a problem at first, until it hit me, programs like "mv", "cp" hell, even "ls" was under a directory owned by root.

So now it's only root that have access to these commands, and when you install Ubuntu it doesn't ask you to make a password for the root user.

So, yeah, I'm f*cked now...

EDIT: Just realised I didn't have a backup

Did you have a bad day today? Cause I have..

I'm full of questions :O

Ooh, that's bad :/

Why did you think it might be beneficial to change the mode of / ??

EDIT: Just realised I didn't have a backup

Just thought of this: insert a ubuntu flash drive and boot of that, then mount the hard drive your server OS is installed on. After that, you can open up a terminal and chmod the crucial folders to normal values.

Crucial folders would include /sbin, /bin, /usr/bin, /usr/sbin ... those will give you your commands back...

For a guide on permissions and how to use them, check out the 'Linux basics' section of my Linux home server howto.

Cause with "750" then no body but root can view the files, so I thought I would just log into root and change the home folders with chown.

Wait, so you were trying to make them UNable to leave their home directory?

Didn't think of that. Thank you, good sir.

I do know the simple things about permissions. I just had to think twice before doing it...
