Hi. I am going to try and do a fun build and then my little brother can use it for gaming. But I am wanting to know is it worth going for like an intel Q6600 vs an 1st or second gen i5 or i7 also with some of the old cpu's it allows you to only have DDR2 is this still good for gaming these days.

Thanks

If used, then 2nd gen (Sandy Bridge).

i5 2500k/i7 2600k + P67 board can be quite cheap.

On the Q6600 it really depends, what games you play, what resolution, and what the rest of the  System is.

If you use a GTX 970 or similar, then such an old CPU will limit for Sure.

If your CPU limits you to DDR2, it's not going to be good for gaming.

You want atleast a quadcore CPU for gaming as well. Some faster dual core chips aren't so bad. But I imagine you're probably not going to be Overclocking, so aim for a quad core DDR3 anything.

How does DDR2 limit gaming performance unless there is an on board gpu without a dedicated? I was under the impression that relatively low CAS was far better because the bandwidth still basically never got saturated during gaming. Much like current PCIE3 Lanes. I could be wrong.

Is DDR2 ram not bad for gaming then.

Intel Core i3 2100  is that any good for 720p gamin. Even though its only dual core.

Oh I thought there is not much difference in gaming in DDR2 VS 3 I could be wrong then

Linus should do a video on that :D

Though with DDR4 out now he should probably do like a DDR4 vs DDR3 vs DDR2 video or something like that.

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

Depends on the Game itself, and the GPU you use ^^ Some games are really CPU Hungry.

But it's okay.

It also depends on the Price.. if you pay 15 bucks more, for an i5 2400/2500, then go for that.

So a Q6600 with 8 GB DDR2 ram with a average good gpu would do good 720P gaming. Thanks

Depends on the gpu. Not sure how much you are really saving though. How much are you going to spend on cpu/motherboard and ram?

Do you live near microcenter?

I was going to buy from ebay. It was a package with 4GB DDR2 with cooler and mobo but I would need to buy a GPU and PSU also a case. It is for £50.

Sounds good.  Check prices on phenom ii x4. Not sure what those are going for nowadays but those were awesome

Note; There's also Xeon equivalents to Gen 1 Core iX parts, X58 and i7 920+ or Xeon W3520+ or X5550+ or E5520+ are a nice combination, or LGA 1156 Motherboard and Xeon X3440+ Core i7 860+ are cheap ways to get ahold of atleast 8thread parts of nahalem  (1st Gen core iX cpus)
