Unless the updates to new versions will be free in the future you probably don't need a new motherboard three times before you need to buy a new license. For Windows 10, when you upgrade a component on a system already running that OS, it'll be temporarily deactivated. But you take note of your current key (via third party software) and simply re-enter it to get it activated. Not sure if that was your question or not but thought I'd point it out. So if I buy oem Windows 10 and then 2 years down the road I want to get a new motherboard/CPU can I get my old Windows on my old motherboard and re activate it to my new motherboard/CPU? (still using the same hard drives) Yes. But it can only be activated on one PC at a time. As a side note, the same holds true for Windows 7 and 8. Keep it to one PC and you can reuse keys. Hell, you paid for them right? Microsoft isn't that hard up for your money that you'd have to purchase every time you wanted to upgrade or do a reinstall. Though with an OEM version it's not impossible, it makes it easier if it were a full retail version.
