why is my freeNAS so slow?

first off , I know I know my hardware sucks bla bla bla.

specs.

Old acer extensa 5720 

So a dual core intel cpu @ 2.0GHZ

3Gb of DDR2 

and for drives im running external USB drives both are usb 3 but the laptop is usb2 running in raid 0.

all of this is wired into my link-sys router.

running benchmarks i top out at 10mb/s read and 5mb/s write.

so please no hate , but why is that so low?

3gb of ram could be causing your problems with freenas. I would recommend switching to Nas4Free. Also, what NIC are you using?

 

10mb/s might not be as bad as you think it is if you're using a USB 2.0 based device -- which has a theoretical cap of 480mbps (60MB/s) -- much lower in real world use.

Are you using gigabit Ethernet? 100Mbps will cap out at about 10MBps.

If you're raiding all those drives together, they will go as fast as the slowest drive. If the slowest drive is on USB2.0 then around 10-15MB/s would be expected

Edit: even though those USB drives are USB3.0, that laptop is so old it only has USB2.0 connectors, so they will all be limited to USB2.0 speeds.

A few questions that need to be answered before any sort of proper diagnosis:

 

1. How are you raiding these drives to RAID 0? Windows software RAID? 3rd party software like FreeNAS?

2. What is your rated network speeds? I mean internally, not how fast your internet runs. Is it 100/10, or 1000/100/10?

3. What is the size and speeds of these external drives?
