Buying this build tomorrow!! Am I doing anything wrong?

Dragaan

Hello, everyone.  I have finally decided on what will be my new PC for the next 3-5 years.  These are the parts I have decided on.  If anyone has a similar build or knows why I should/shouldn't be using X or Y part in this build, please let me know.  It has been very stressful trying to figure out exactly what I should go with, but I think I have a pretty solid PC:

Case:   Thermaltake Core V51 Riing Edition  (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811133281)

-I realize it's flamboyant and some of you will think it's tacky.  I personally like the color and think it gives it personality.  Almost no one will be seeing it but me anyway.

CPU:   Intel i7 5820k  (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117402)

MOBO:   ASUS Sabertooth TUF X99  (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813132518)

RAM:   Corsair Vengeance LPX 3000 DDR4 16GB (4x4)  (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233740)

-Unless these will fit with my cooler, which I don't think they will - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231928&cm_re=g._skill_tridentz-_-20-231-928-_-Product

GPU:   TBD.....  Between http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127850&cm_re=msi_970-_-14-127-850-_-Product or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125682&cm_re=980_GTX-_-14-125-696-_-Product or maaaaaaybe http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814500379&cm_re=980_GTX-_-14-500-379-_-Product

(I am very much considering upgrading the graphics card within the next year or so, once they come out with new models and I save up for one, so that is being taken into account)

PSU:   EVGA P2 750 Platinum (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA1N83U89934&cm_re=evga_p2_750-_-17-438-057-_-Product)

Cooler:   Cryorig R1 Ultimate  (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA4UF1H68938)

Buying this addon as well because I think it might look great with my case (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA4UF2YV0603)

I had planned on getting an AIO at first, and spent countless hours researching all the different models, including the expandable ones with colored coolant.  In the end, it came to my attn that this air cooler is phenomenal, and I really like the way it looks.  It also allows me to use the front/top case fan spots for nice fans such as the Thermaltake green Riing ones to keep my rig VERY well ventilated.

SSD:   Samsung 850 EVO 500GB

Extra Thingy:   (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811996004&cm_re=LCD_Panel-_-11-996-004-_-Product)  (looks really cool in youtube vids)

Optical Drive:  Some ASUS crap http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827135204

Main questions are about the mobo, really.  I want a board that overclocks well, with great power/voltage supply/regulation/etc that looks good in my setup and has all the features I need.  I doubt I'll be hooking up much else besides what is listed here and several nice 120/140cm fans for my case (probably the green Thermaltake Riing fans).  Thank you all very much for your time!

Well first off what do you plan to do with your pc? If rendering and editing videos then keep the 5820k, if gaming primarily go for the 4690k and pair either with an r9 390 because of the greater DX12 results compared to nvidia and the higher vram will help when you need it later on in the future. The 970 is worse than the r9 390 and this is completely unbiased. The 980 sure as hell beats the r9 390 but its not worth the value for it especially since you could go for the 980ti for 100-150 dollars more.

Looks ok to me. However, do you really need the optical drive? If you don't use DVD / Blu-ray / other disc media often it might be worth ditching it completely. If you are thinking you need it to install your hardware / os you are better off downloading official installs and updated drivers and loading via thumb drive.

Also, you might want to consider any additional or replacement case fans. Enjoy your build!

If I went with the ti I'd just throw a little more cash at the build.  But since I plan on upgrading the card once the new ones come out I thought it'd be smarter to just get a 980 or 970 for now, since most of what I play is WoW anyway.

Well you can always sell your 980ti for "1080 Ti" when it coming out next year.

I mainly game and diddle around on the net, but I have always enjoyed having a beefy cpu and I like to OC and push benchmarks for fun, so having an overkill processor is actually kinda important to me.

One thing I considered was just going with a 6600k, saving some money, and getting the 980ti.  The only way I would do this is if there are new beefy cpus coming out that will use the Z170 mobo.  From what I heard X99 is getting new cpus but Z170 is NOT (skylake-e being on an entirely different platform).

The only way I'd even consider a skylake chip, though, is if their slightly increased IPC and overall speed actually made them perform better in games like WoW.  From what I understand, though, the 5820 meets or exceeds even in games like that.  Is this true?

At the start I was leaning more towards skylake, but everywhere I look people always end up saying the 5820k is just plain better.

BTW, the 5820k is only 299 for me.  6700k is 380 and 6600k is 200.

I would say if you mainly game i would get 980ti and x99 if you able to fit into your budget. At most pascel/polaris only can be around 10-20% performance which is not a huge difference if you going to overclock your 980ti. It should have to handle VR and games for a long time at 1080p MAX. It really up to your choice, pascel is going to hard to buy when it first release and it might have higher priced as well. I have 6700k which great for my needs as I am waiting for Skylake-e which is another 3-4 years when there new technologies.

I'd recommend the 6600k because games use only 4 cores and you're buying a hybrid 'workstation and gaming' cpu in the form of an i7. However, the core clocks are lower on the 5820k compared to the 6600k. Overclocking the 6600k instead and buying a 980ti with the extra money saved will definetely benefit you. I'd recommend an MSI Z170 gaming M7 mobo, but it's up to you. 5820k is uneccessary. 6600k overclocks fine and performs fine as well. If you don't want that, the beefiest quad core skylake chip is currently the 6700k but the price is not worth it at all.

Ya man, I hear you on the ti.  I know it's by far the best card and going with it will be the best way to get better gaming performance.  Thing is, the gpu for me is much much easier to just upgrade later.  The whole mobo/cpu platform thing is a really important choice that you can't really go back on (well, without re-doing your entire build...).

Well like I said above, I will gladly go with the 6600k right now if it was certain that I would be able to upgrade to a new chip with my Z170 board in the (near) future.  I KNOW X99 will let me do a cpu upgrade, but I didn't think the Z170 would...  Do you know if this is true?

On a side note, I really wish MSI made a 980 or 980ti with that neon green color they used for the 970 LE card.  I actually really like how it looks, and it matches my tacky, flamboyant neon green build perfectly. :(

Why not go skylake and DDR4 for some future proofing? (as far as that term gets you that is)

Well...X99 is also DDR4 (and it's quad-channel instead of skylake's dual-channel).  And as far as "future-proofing", refer to my my post right above yours.  From what I've heard, the Z170 board is a dead-end, with skylake-e requiring an entirely different platform.  X99 WILL have several new chips coming out to upgrade to.  So if this is all correct, I would think X99 is much, much, much more "future proof" (especially since it has 2 extra cores to begin with).  But I haven't gotten anyone to tell me if what I've read is correct or not, so I don't know if this is entirely true yet....

I would love for someone to verify what I've been reading, about X99 having new cpus coming out later this year and Z170 being a dead-end platform.

If this is wrong then that changes everything for me.

I'd stay with the 5820k and yes there are more high end lga 2011-3 (x99) processors coming out this year which is the 6800 6850 and 2 more higher end that i forget the name of but they should all beat the 6700k and any z170 processors. And if i were you I'd see if I could squeeze a little bit more of money for a 980 ti. The G1 gaming is $650 which is still stock price I think for a 980 ti.

If I got the 980ti it would definitely be http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814500379.  I've heard nothing but amazing things about it.  Just how smart is it to buy a 650 dollar year-old card, though?  The last card I got (using still now) is a Radeon HD 5870.  It has worked decently all this time.  I stopped paying attn to computers for several years, though, and just got back into it this month.  From the benchmarks I've been seeing, Nvidia has been (purposefully?) messing up their previous gen cards so that their newest ones look better in games.  I saw the 780ti go from meeting/beating the 970 in one of the AAA titles to barely 50% of the 970 in one patch/driver update.  I'm afraid of buying a $650-700 Nvidia card only to have that happen later this year when the next cards come out.  I even considered an AMD (Fury or 390X), but I've heard AMD went down the tubes in recent years, with driver mishaps and stuttering/crashing in games....  This is all why I'm still not rock-solid sure on the GPU yet....  I've still got a lot to consider til I make the purchase...  It could honestly just end up being the neon green MSI 970 cause it's cheaper and matches my build (and does fine with WoW, which is 99% of what I play), then an upgrade to the next-gen cards once they arrive.

Do you know if the Z170 will have any future upgrades over the 6700k?

No one knows :(

I've asked all over.  That's the million-dollar question, "Is the Z170 a dead-end platform?" (meaning no upgrades to the 6700k in the future).

Ah, didn't look into that.

If it has quad DDR4, then you are pretty much golden with the build.
