Hi, so I have a freesync monitor and a 970 (I was able to get my hands on a XG270HU for next to nothing so I wasn't really looking at freesync/gsync at the time)

That being said, with polaris/pascal on the way I was wondering if it's worth going team red because of the screen.

Taking under consideration that g-sync displays are quite a bit more expensive, is the g-sync itself that much better to justify the additional costs?

Also, are there any release date estimates on the more powerful gpus from pascal and polaris? I've been thinking of switching to Fury/Fury X to actually

be able to use the freesync at all, but I don't really want to get it a month before something better shows up.

Thanks for the help in advance!

Well a Fury beats the pants off a GTX 970.  But its $600 cost to do so... I don't think its worth the upgrade.

Please spend as much time writing your question, as you want me to spend responding to it.  Take some time, and explain your issue, please!

Blind trials on Tomshardware and various tests done from various places have shown gsync to be a better experience, people prefer it. Its also a lot more feature rich as it contains all the features of lightsync 2 as well, so that is things like 3D glasses support and ultra low motion blur mode. But saying that the experience continues to slowly get better on freesync and the last reports from pcper.com is its basically equivalent in their experience so long as the monitor is itself decent as the range of quality varies wildly. So long as your monitor is high refresh rate and its got the 2.5x max refresh rate of min then its going to behave well in all the scenarios even if its not quite as good as gsync. Most people don't care much about the other features so its not an issue for them.

We don't know how the future GPUs are going to shake out at all yet. What I would say is that adaptive sync in any format is much better than just vsync on or off, so despite my preference for Nvidia's drivers (I have machines with both a Fury and 970 and the 970 is a better 0 day experience in most games) I would still take adaptive sync over not, its more important than the GPU most of the time. So I would say if an upgrade is worth it you should certainly consider a card with freesync support in the future and its a major consideration for your next purchase (and I feel an unfortunate one we all face now we have this split in technology with no end in sight because both Nvidia and AMD are acting in anti competitive ways), but you also don't want to get a bad card with a bad driver situation either as that will be worse. You can't make that decision yet and presumably you don't want to make a Fury decision currently so there is nothing to do now. You need to wait for a lot more information and reviews and 0 day reports on stability. You don't want to buy a failure card like the 7970 as that will ruin your experience completely and no one knows what either company is really going to deliver this year.

Pretty much this.

Gsync held better performance and a better overall experience but freesync is catching up. It does make a huge difference that most people don't realize until they experience it. If selling the display isn't an option then you're better off waiting for Polaris.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

Yeah I guess the best option would be to just wait and see the new polaris/pascal cards and then I'll be deciding if I want to keep the freesync monitor or sell and go full green team. (Wish they would come out already lol)

FreeSync behaviour has changed through AMD driver updates since the Tom's Hardware blind tests, notably with the elimination of FreeSync minimum ranges on most monitors. It now goes down to 0Hz like G-Sync.
