5ms vs 1ms response time

ripper101

So I'm looking to purchase a second monitor which has a 5ms response time or getting a different one that has a 1ms response time. Is 1ms vs 5ms response time really a big difference?

Check reviewers who have actually measured and taken pictures of the motion blur of both screens and compare them that way.  The response time numbers can be quite misleading.

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

There is no noticeable difference.

Response time is the time it takes for a pixel to change from one colour to another. It is normally quoted in Grey to grey (GtG), so it is 1ms or 5ms to change from one shade of grey to another shade. To give you an idea of how little difference it makes, 5ms GtG response time means that it takes 0.005 seconds to change from one shade of grey to another. Be aware that it makes no difference to how quickly a monitor responds to an input, contrary to what a lot of people believe. At worst, it can cause some ghosting (similar to motion blur)

The response time statistic is pretty much entirely pointless. As you said, they can be misleading. Partially because there is no standardised way to measure response times, as well as the fact that the vast majority of them are in GtG, so it doesn't tell you anything about the response time for colours.
