The CPU's you can put in it mostly.

For example the highest amount of cores available on the Z710 platform (as of now) is 4 (so 8 threads) while on X99 you can get 8 cores and 16 threads.

It just kinda depends on what you want really

5960x is 8 cores, 16 threads @ 3.0ghz; 6700k is 4 cores, 8 threads @ 4.0ghz. Single threaded applications will do better on the 6700k, but overall, the 5960x will definitely out perform it in everything else. And that's before overclocking; most Haswell-e chips can hit 4.4-4.6ghz at 1.3v. I'm not sure what the 6700k's are doing, but I'd guess 4.7/4.8 on the high end, so really not much difference.

My 5960x is hitting 3.86 ghz@.96 vcore. Still not done overclocking. Took a. Break.

Stable as of right now

Does make make me a n official "enthusiast"?

not really

you dont need to be an enthusiast to have enough money for x99

you can also be an enthusiast and not be able to afford x99, or simply not need x99

The X on the X99 stands for eXtreme!

eXtreme CPU core count!

eXtreme Power!

eXtreme Performance!

eXtreme Memory architecture!

eXtreme increase in power bill!

eXtreme rise in blood pressure after looking at power bill.

:P

Difference in X99 and Z170 are, the X99 has more PCIe lanes and will be able to support from dual and up to quad socket configurations. Not all X99 cpus has insane TDPs, some are as low as 55w TDP.

Xeon E5 4669 v3 is a 18 core / 36 thread cpu, that supports up to 4 sockets, so with 4 of them, you get a combine total of 144 threads!
