i5 or i7

Hi guys, looking for a little bit of advice. My current PC is running with a core i5 4460, which i'm happy with for the time being. What I'd like to get advice with, is if I should upgrade it to a i7 4790K (probably would happen in the next year) or wait until its time to do a complete system overhaul and go with a skylake or what ever else comes along.

It depends on what you are doing. Most games wont really benefit much from hyper threading, so no point in upgrading to an i7, or even ever getting an i7 in the future if your just gaming. If you are editing or streaming, and need that hyper threading then yes.

Just wait. Unless you're video editing or streaming, then the extra threads will go to waste.

What are you doing with the system, if it's something the i5 can't keep up with then go with the i7.

You won't get much more performance moving to a hotter Haswell processor. Especially since you're happy with it as-is, you'll be much better off waiting for Kaby Lake to roll around. It'll bring significant performance improvements over Skylake in the same way devil's canyon did with Haswell.

At the moment its only gaming, but i would like to stream sometime in the future. So if you think a i7 is over kill, would a better i5 be a smarter option?

In that case I would stick with the i5 for now, should be fine. Also consider Zen from AMD for your next build, since it will probably have many cores. I would recommend an AMD octacore right now, but Vishra is just so old.

If you do this, you will be waiting forever since the next line of CPU's will ALWAYS be better.

if you see you need more performance buy a used 4790k on craigslist or something, they are really cheap there

He has something now, from the same architecture as what he's considering upgrading to.

I would only upgrade, if you run into CPU Limit sometime (like, you stream at settings, where your i5 struggles). Before that, keep it.
