Upgrade to 4790k or 6700k?

Ekstrak

So I can finally get around to doing some serious upgrades to my pc. And I have 2 upgrade paths.

My current setup is as follows
FX6860 (/mainboard)
Intel Core i7-2600
16GB Generic Memory
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti
Samsung SSD 840 EVO 120GB
Hitachi HDS723020BLA642 2TB
EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G2 750W 80 Plus Gold Certified

I'm looking to upgrade to the following

GIGABYTE GA-Z170X-Gaming 7 Socket 1151
Intel Core i7-6700K
Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB (4x8GB) DDR4 2666MHz (or 16GB)

Or the 4790k, haven't decided on a motherboard yet. If anyone would like to suggest memory and a motherboard it would be greatly appreciated.
I plan using the system for streaming games and video editing. Also if it helps I'm running a quad monitor setup with my main being a ASUS VG248QE 24 144hz.
Thanks :)

Wait for the next intel CPU skew. The i7 2600 is still a capable CPU.

If really want to upgrade to have USB 3.1 or M.2 (idk why you'd upgrade otherwise tbh) i would suggest an intel i7-6700 (non K) and an Asus B150 Gaming D3 motherboard that supports the DDR3 you already have.

2600 is fine, if you're really set on upgrading get the 4790k. There's only a 4% performance difference between that the the 6700k.

Current Build: Core i7 4790k @ 4.6, Asus Maximus VII Hero, Corsair Vengeance Pro 2400mhz 8gb (2x4gb), GTX 980ti, NZXT Kraken X61, Fractal Define R5  EVGA Supernova B2 850w, Some 300gb hard drive.

your CPU is fine...if you don't reach full utilisation on your GPU then i think it's time to step-up to a better higher-resolution monitor instead (1440p gaming monitor)

What do you have for monitor? and what kind of games you play?

| CPU: Core i7-8700K @ 4.89ghz - 1.21v  Motherboard: Asus ROG STRIX Z370-E GAMING  CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i V2 |

I should probably note that its not a 2600k, if it were I wouldn't bother.

I'll probably upgrade to those in a few years, I have a knack of constantly cycling through things.

I feel drawn to it as well, I don't know I just may be obsessed

Go for a 5820K + X99 then. It's the same price as a 6700K + Z170

If you have a little patience, you could wait for Broadwell-E, and maybe see if the prices arent increased, over Haswell-E. Otherwise, id say go for the 6700K, unless you can find a more affordable 4790K, which is still an incredibly powerful cpu, when compared to Skylake. Its only the features really you would be losing, but even in that it wouldnt be drastic. Patience would be wiser :P

The difference is not that big so, if I were you I won't upgrade unless you need the new features (M.2, USB 3.1 and type-c...)

If that's not the case, I'll rather stay with what you have, and save some more money to upgrade in 1 or 2 more generations to a Skylake-E platform or to a new AMD Zen CPU

I've got a ASUS VG248QE 24 144hz monitor as my main, two ASUS VE247H Black 23.6. With a 32 LG LED.

I play mostly League of Legends, Diablo 3, WoW . Ton of other games but randomly.

wow :o...why in the world did you buy a GTX 980ti then?!

step-up to 1440p or 4K man...if you really want a CPU upgrade then the i7-5820K is a much better choice...the 6700K is super overpriced right now and the 5820K has 2 extra cores (+4 threads) you can overclock it to 4.4ghz easily and it will match the 6700K.

But honestly...yeah...why a 980ti on a 1080p monitor playing super not demanding old school games? o.O

I would personally stick to the i7-2600 and order a 1440p 144hz Gsync monitor instead.

Depends where you live ;)

In germany, the 6700k costs 355€, and the 5820k 390€.

Motherboard is still 80-100€ Difference, so 5820k costs 150~ more.

Anyway, i wouldnt step up to an oldwell 4790k, since the Skylake can be 10-25% faster, depending on situation. Glboalfoundry measured 17% higher avg fps at same clock speed over several newer Games.

Of Course, except the 4790k platform would cost you like 80+€ less. If not, then skylake.

Edit: lol, a 980 ti for those games? Even in 4k that would be a Fail.

On 1080p, my AMD 7870 ( = GTX 950 !) manages 400+ fps in League of Legends, all maxed out (of course i sadly have to use VSync or the game is absolutely unplayable)

Diablo 3 should be similar, WoW not so.

But an i5 would be more than enough. Diablo and LoL dont need anything more than a dual core, and WoW can not use Hyperthreaded cores at ALL.
