Potentially Buying a 980ti

I understand that there isnt much information out there about Paschal but once Paschal comes out will the 980ti still be an elite gaming card? Im not ready to drop 600$ on a card if a generation coming out this year will show it up. I guess my question is: What will the lifespan of relevance for a 980ti be if I were to buy it in May?

The 980ti should beat the Pascal cards unto it's replaced around a year from now. But this is at 1440, at 4K the 1080 might beat a 980ti.

The 980ti is one of nvidia's best graphics cards right now. It may not be "the best" once its Pascal equivalent is released, but it's still a very solid card.

Will the 980ti be the elite gaming card once Pascal GPUs come out? Maybe not. Wait and see if you can wait.

Do you figure the price will drop much when Paschal is released? I haven't been in the gaming scene very long so I have no reference with he previous generations.

Pascal will have a gpu roughly equivalent to the 980ti, and one or two gpus better than it, plus the titan.

 

Looking at the 780ti, it is just a bit better than the 970 overall, sometimes lower sometimes higher. The 980 is a bit better and so on. This has been the pattern for a while, one thing to keep in mind is that nvidia tends to release the x70 and x80 models first, then months later the x80 ti. The x80 over the last couple gens has dropped in price with the ti's release. I'm ignoring the titan mostly due to its absurd pricing. But it will release at launch and will be far better.

 

So yes, Pascal will most likely top the 980ti at launch (most likely by a small amount if previous trends hold true) with a ti released months later and a titan at launch. It's up to you if you'd rather wait, but the 980ti is still going to be a beast no matter what Pascal eventually brings to the table.

Don't expect the 980ti to come down much in price.

It'll really depend on how the new card perform. Problem right now is we have no clear data as to what paschal will be. But if trends are to be considered, then yes the prices should go down but for gpus like the 980ti, that'll be minimal at best and most likely not budge till 6 months after the new cards come. All speculations.

The 980Ti will still be elite, Pascal comes out in Q2(Second quarter) of the year.

Remember AMD is releasing Polaris too.

AMD seems to be at least a month ahead of Nvidia with Polaris than Pascal.

After Pascal and Polaris launch though I am pretty certain the 980 ti will drop in price.

Chances are it will go down to around 500-550 if not lower.

They only drop in prices used. New ones in store just slowly sell. The 780 is still like $450-$500.

 

This has been a trend for many generations, the previous generation does drop in price much, if at all, when the new one comes out.

True. However their worth does go down even if prices don't.

Yes. But you still won't get them for cheaper unless it's used.

 

Ebay becomes amazing around launch time  people sell off perfectly good cards for cheap to upgrade to the 5% better flagship.

That's subjective. I wanted to crossfire another 290 with mine after the 390 launched. Only the 290 had gone up in price because of the limited quantities and when I bought a 390 to save money the 390 didn't crossfire very well with the 290 and performed worse in games. So newer doesn't always mean better.

The 980Ti is an enthusiast Card with insane amount of Power. As long you dont want use 4K, you will enjoy it very long.

I would buy an aftermarked Modell though.
