860m vs 960m?

Tiber1337

I know they're about the same, but is it worth it giving extra 50$ for the 960m 4gb , or just go with the 860m 4gb?

Laptops are exatly the same in every other way including screen

the 960M is clocked faster than the 860M and i believe the only pros of getting the 960M is because of the DX12 support

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

I'd rather go with 960m. Since this is a laptop and we can't upgrade in the future, better go with something faster right now :)

They are the same GPU. Why wouldn't they support DX12?

The only difference is the higher clock.

Both are the exact same 750 TI core. 960M is clocked at 1200MHz vs 1100MHz on the 860M. You can also OC with an additional +135 core and +125 memory on both.

so it just the same chip with a faster clock from the factory

Is there any chance I can get the 860m Kepler version on a y50 laptop? I'm am afraid of getting a kepler tbh, the seller doesen't know the architecture

No. Y50s all come with the GM107 860M due to TDP limitations of Kepler (Kepler 860M was hotter than Maxwell one)

I'd go for the 960m, it's a maxwell, which means lower power requirements which in turn results in less heat and thus less thermal throttling.

1. I confused the 860 with the 870 that I have

2. My point still stands. Seems some 860m's are kepler while some are maxwell.

Ooh, didn't know. I thought 870m as kepler.

Actually, wikipedia supports my knowledge:

Who's talking about a 870M?

Not really. 860M Kepler is no-longer being made and hasn't been produced in over a year. None are being sold anymore
