1080p future proof graphics card?

So, I'm finally able to do a upgrade on my PC. My big question is.......what video card to get? My price range is 200-330ish. Should i go gtx 960 4gb route, r9 380 for the red team; or jump up to gtx 970/ r9 390. I am not doing 4k or even 1440p yep, I just want really good 1080p @ 60 to 120 fps? Also is it worth buying the 4gb vs 2gb model as games progress in the future? Thank you guys continue to be awesome!

380 or 390.

Nothing in that price range is future proof. Nothing. Good news is nothing out of it is ether :P

 

Depends on the games you play. but the 390/970 will be the best choice. The 390 has more power for a little more fps, the 970 is much smoother and offers an arguably better gaming experience, but comes in behind the 390 in some titles fps wise.

I've had both. The heat is the same once both are overclocked. And they trade positions with driver support according to the calendar. Nvidia has much better driver support day one, AMD has better support after a few months. Really comes down to the games you play, and if you want access to exclusive features which only Nvidia carries.

With the announcement of new architecture from AMD, I would wait and you'll be able to get (hopefully) much better performance for the current prices.

390 or 380/X will probably deliver the best 1080p performance you can get for the money if you're buying new. Used, it's the 7990, which you can get for around $350 (although it requires at least a 750W power supply for the sake of efficiency).

 

The 970 is nice, but as is normally the case, it comes at a price premium.

 

Just don't expect anything to be "future-proof" - even Hawaii-based graphics cards will be rendered obsolete eventually.

There is no futureproof GPU, and hopefully this will go on for many years. In the CPU sector we are seeing people buying stuff because their old stuff died or they are bored and want something new. Every GPU you buy today will be bad tomorrow.

 

It isnt even clear that the gtx980ti will survive as undisputed #1 performer after the 1070/1080 pascal releases. Some people might remember the day when the 970's and 980's came out and beatn the shit out of the much more expansive gtx780ti.

 

For what we can tell now is, that everything beneath a furyX isnt enough for 1080p gaming anymore. Since they are already multiple titles that cant run maxed out @60fps on lower then a FuryX.

Price to perform your not going to do any better then if you can grab a 290/290x...  Future proof?  Sure if your willing to run at medium settings in 2 years.  Personally I cant tell the difference between Ultra and high unless i stare at a screen shot.

AMD's graphics cards are more future proof. They perform better at DirectX12, and contain more VRAM, which will be beneficial in the future when games use bigger textures. The only downside to AMD is that they consume substantially more power than NVIDIA(besides the Nano.

that's true, I forgot that. Fortunately it can be addressed by capping tesselation to 16x in the AMD settings, which has very little noticeable impact on image quality while substantially improving performance.

They look neck and neck to me. Also keep in mind Ashes of the Singularity isn't a real DX12 title, they turned off asynchronous shaders because NVIDIA told them to, as NVIDIA doesn't have hardware support for it, making it run poorly with them.

You do realize that proves DX12 changes nothing, right? The 980ti is a reference 980ti. Everyone knows a custom 980ti which is what 95% of the people with 980ti's have beats not only a Fury X but a Titan X. So "neck and neck" isn't good. And the 390 and 970 are neck and neck all the time, which is why non fanboys say they're equal.
