I might be mistaken here, but I think that back in the day, 1000Hz was out of spec for USB and was considered almost a hack

The difference between 500hz and 1000hz is unnoticeable when stable but 1000hz isn't always that.

No one posted the easy answer so i will.

If your mouse is wireless it can significantly save battery life time setting your polling rate lower.

Doing normal in windows stuff like browsing websites and such you would never need more then around 125

For gaming i would recommend 500+

High polling rate will demand more from your CPU, but with today's CPU's it should not be a problem, i personally use 1000hz because i need every bit of accuracy when playing competitively.

This is true, but when your mouse can hold steady 1000hz, you do feel a difference with your mouse, my mouse is a steady runner at that number.

No need to watch the entire video here, but look at my twitch aim, it would be quite a lot different using a lower polling rate that's for sure.

I'd agree asides from battery the biggest reason would be compatibility. My friend lent me his CM Storm inferno and it works at 1000hz fine on my laptop, but I tried using it on a friend's desktop and 500-1000hz polling would cause really weird stuttering whenever you moved the mouse. at 333hz and below everything was fine. Not the best conditions, but I'd rather have it work than not.

because 1000hz is not stable when compared to 500hz.

Enjoy those tacos now, for in 1000 years they will be illegal... eh Ha Ha Ha! I think we all know why.
